What are the best tuners?

...The ones on my Les Paul Studio wont stay in tune for a freakin second and its killing me. Its probably my fault though, I walk around my house with it all the time and knock em into the walls. Anyways I cant play for more than 2 minutes tops without the strings going out of tune so i've decided im going to buy new ones that will get the job done, but I have no clue which ones to go with. Any suggestions? Money is not a concern for this so im looking for the best money can buy. :rocket:

Tuners are almost never the problem, so check the everything else first.

+1. Keep it stock. I have really old Kluson's on one of my LP's, that you can almost spin when the strings are off. I lock the strings by overlapping when I put them on, and once they're on, it stays in tune great. Everyone thinks they need Grovers, or locking tuners, when all they need is a good nut, bridge, and to properly lock the strings when restringing.

Re: What are the best tuners?

Try to get your nut filed and look at the bridge for grooves and sharp edges.
New tuners will not help anything if those two things are not in working order!

That, and make sure you don't have a lot of string wrapping around your tuning pegs (a couple string wraps on each peg is more than enough), and... stop walking bumping into things with your guitar!

My favorites are the ones the Fender Showmasters come with: the Ping Rotomatic self-locking style. I love 'em.

Re: What are the best tuners?

I agree with what the guys are saying, though I must admit to putting a set of locking sperzels on my Custom and I have to say that without doing anything with the nut, bridge or anything else, the tuning is much much more stable as this guitar was a pig for going out of tune... and string changes are literally less than 5 minutes!

Re: What are the best tuners?

I really like the Gotoh Kluson-style tuners I put in my LP. They look like Klusons but have a higher gear ratio. They are not expensive, either.

Re: What are the best tuners?

hey, i like my steinberger's 40:1 ratio tuners, but they don't work on an LP. I think the biggest argument for locking tuners is not tuning, but how fast string changes are- i am sold- pull it through, lock and 1/2 turn and it is in tune. this is why they are on all of my guitars.

Re: What are the best tuners?

I have grovers on my epi and they really ate great. My fave tuners are my sperzels on my carvin tho, unbeatable,
