What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

I just bought one on ebay for me and my bassist because we need them for stage...but im hoping they dont suck too much tone...what are your experiences with them?

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

I've never experienced the oft-ballyhooed "tone suck" of the TU-2. Maybe I got lucky? or maybe I'm just tone deaf?

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

I've got one.
Its in my signal path before it hits my amp.
I have it sitting last in the chain, so it also acts as a master mute.

Its an excellent tuner for quick onstage tuning thats for sure!
Some people goto peterson strobes or whatever for accuracy. Well- my guitar aint even intonated the best, so i dont care- i just tune it and play it.

As for tone sucking, it might - but i don't notice, cause I always leave it in there.
You know this is somethin that I get cut about. Everyones like 'ooohh no- it can't suck the tone!'
Really- what is tone?
All tone is, is a sum of everything in the chain + your fingers.
A Pedal will affect tone, thats for sure.
But what the tone becomes is something different (not suckier). Just cause it ain't your guitar and the amp doing all the 'tone shaping', you think its gonna suck.
But its evolved, and you compensate for it or you get used to it and get over it.

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

Lol well said Grandor, i partly agree!

I mean some things can suck tone in that they might for some reason muddy up the tone and really degrade it or thin it out...and ive had this happen before and i dont like it...but i only dont like it when im sitting there comparing them in my bedroom trying to figure out if it sucks tone! Like you said if you're on stage and always have it in your chain you will get used to it and compensate with EQ or whatever on your amp...im pretty sure plenty of pros with tone that we all love use heaps of eleged "tone sucking" pedals in front of their amps...but most tone is in the fingers!!! IN THE FINGERS!!!!

I concur.

Before the TU-2, the only muting pedal tuner available (mass market) was the Arion Stage Tuner. Great for the time and for what it was, but the TU-2 is light years ahead of the Stage Tuner. There may be more 'accurate' tuners, but for reliability, quality of build, accuracy, and generally being handy and usable- right now the TU-2 is unbeatable.

When I refer to 'accuracy' you can have a tuner that's 'too accurate.' You'll spend more time bouncing between flat and sharp than playing. My Korg rack tuner in my bass rig is like that. I just ball park it in the neighborhood of the green light.

I sport a TU-2, and I sport it with pride and confidence.

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

I don't know anyone whose opinion I trust on gear that doesn't use the TU-2.

Maybe I'm a fool, but the strobostomp rules... :D

I've had a TU2 on my pedalboard for about 6 years now.

It's always been a good, reliable pedal for me :)

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

I've been using a TU-2 for four years now. As far as my knackered cloth ears can tell it makes absolutely no difference to my tone. It's simple to use, accurate, easy to read in all lighting conditions (except possibly VERY bright sunlight), and is solidly built. Useful as a mute too for when you're swapping guitars and you don't want a loud BZZZT coming out the amp. Definitely gets my reccomendation. :fing2:

Where in the chain are y'all running yours?

You're going to share one TU-2 between the two of you? If so, you'll probably end up wanting your own to keep in your pedal chain.

I haven't noticed any major "tone suckage" at all, and the mute option is great.

Mine is currently right at the end of my effects chain, after the delay. That's just because on my current pedalboard that's the best place to keep it out the way of the other pedals, so I don't hit it accidentally. You really don't want to step on the TU-2 as you launch into a big solo. :smack:

I've also run it right at the start, before the wah. It doesn't really matter where you put it (IMO), as long as it gets a clear signal. If it's last in the chain you probably want to turn off all the other effects to use it.

If there is tone suckage, it is very slight because i dont hear much difference. It is pretty accurate, unless you want the insanely accuracy of a Peterson then this isn't for you, but it is several cuts above the £12 lil plastic tuners you tend to get thrown in when you buy a new axe. On top of that it is in your standard Boss pedal housing that is as solid as a tank. I have used mine for 3 years now and not one problem what so ever and i have no need to replace it. Thumbs up here

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

I have two--one is on my acoustic guitar pedalboard, first pedal in a short chain.

On my electric PB, I have the TU-2 in slot #3--after my preamp and compressor.

There are a couple that are more accurate, like the Strobostomp--but it is very expensive.

Only complaint--bright sunlight washes out the LEDs.

I think a tuner pedal is the most important pedal in the chain, whether it's first or last. I haven't noticed any tone loss with mine. I'm not sure whether some people who notice a loss are factoring in the added cable. I have used pedals that affect the base tone in a negative way, but the TU-2 is definitely not one of them.

Re: What are your experiences with boss tu2 stompbox stage tuner?

Most guys use it last in the chain? I pretty shure that it should be first in the chain: Guitar --> TU-2 --> other pedals --> amp

It's a great pedal and easy to use, I do find myself wishing it would lock onto a note sooner. It's not accurate enough IMHO for intonation purposes but that's not really an issue.
On stage it's your best friend! :)

I have it last, as any noise generated by the pedals is muted by the tuner.
