What are your favorite picks?

Re: What are your favorite picks?

Dunlop .88's. Beveled edges for a sharper tone when you want it, and they have raised lettering which gives a secure grip when you're playing onstage with sweaty fingers, and don't want the pick flying out of your hand.

Re: What are your favorite picks?

I've been using V-Pick's Screamers and Gravity Pick's Stealths for about a year now, I'd rate them nearly equal but the Stealths get the nod - a close second would be the Big Stubbys, though

Re: What are your favorite picks?

I used V-Picks (forget which model - the standard Large thick one that he started with) for quite awhile but could never jive 100% with the clicking and chirpy attack. It's hard to play dynamically with them too I found. And honestly the trade off in speed vs. using a regular pick was negligible for me. I get way more dynamic response out of the Hercos I switched to.

That's interesting, I stayed away from V-Picks until just recently because of that clicking and chirping. For some reason I don't mind it now, and one of the things I really like about them is the flip side of the chirping _ e.g. their bright and lively tone and attack. Anyway, any chirping there is doesn't come through an amplifier. I would be more bothered by the pick attack noise with my acoustic. For that I'm playing a thin Gravity pick, which is largely quiet but still has that nice brightness. Not sure what you mean by dynamic response... I tried the Herco's and would think they have LESS, not more of a dynamic response. Interesting: our definitions must be different.

Dynamic response in terms of attack - I could never get anything other than a hard-edged, immediate strike out of a V-Pick even when laying back. There is no elasticity to a pick like that, attack-wise. It's all or nothing and the brightness is always there regardless of how hard you hit the guitar - at least it was for me. Forget about using it on acoustic - it was all zingy highs and when I dug in it overdrove the top so hard everything turned mushy.

The Hercos while softer have a lot of snap to them when you dig in - like you're playing with your fingernail. Lay back and it feels a lot like strumming with your thumb. The sound overall has more fullness and clarity. I wanna hear the guitar, not the pick.

I've kept the couple I bought and whip 'em out on occasion just to check myself and I just can't go back to an acrylic pick. The Hercos have been a real education for me in terms of just how huge an effect a pick has on your overall sound and technique.

Re: What are your favorite picks?

Thanks for your response. I guess I'm not hearing that one-dimensional lack of dynamic response like you are - probably because I play electric with a pretty light touch, and actually like it a little brighter all the time. True, I'll never get the "strumming with the thumb" or Wes Montgomery kind of tone with the V-Picks. I use my thumb or fingers if I want that sound. On acoustic I use a thinner (.75mm) Gravity Classic Standard size. It does seem to have some of that varied response you're talking about, that the thicker Screamers don't have. It's still bright, but it flexes, which I think mitigates some of the chirp also, because I'm not hearing that when I play it.

Just out of curiosity - have you tried the V-Pick or Gravity "ultra thin" models (.75mm or .8mm)? To me they're pretty much like a different kind of pick compared to the really thick ones.

Cheers.

I am VERY uncomfortable playing on standard sized picks. I like jazz III sized ones. I also like pics at least 1mm, purely due to feel and control. Its either that or play with my fingers.

I haven't tried the thinner ones as honestly I didn't see the point in it after trying the fatter ones - it's really the material itself that I have the biggest issue with. Having something that rigid just makes my hand feel disconnected from the string.

I had sanded down one of the standards I had and it made a slight improvement to the chirping but that clicky hardness was still there. It's just not a very warm sounding pick to my ears. Because the Hercos are nylon they are not as hard sounding but the top end clarity is there. I'd rather get brightness from the string choice or at the amp than at the pick.

Re: What are your favorite picks?

Re: What are your favorite picks?

Haha... that reminds me of the famous Cartier "Crash Watch". One of Cartier's watches that had unfortunately been in a fiery car crash was brought into the London branch of the Designer House. Jean-Jacques Cartier then was inspired to commission the crafting of this timepiece - designed to have the "look" of the melted watch from the crash. It never really caught on either, I don't think.

Re: What are your favorite picks?

I've used copper/bronze picks since the early eighties. They used to be Dunlop 'Hot Licks' but they are no more. So now I have discovered 'Ice Pix'. there hard to find, and a lot of the time you can only find sampler packs that have a SS pics along with the copper/bronze thin ones. Trust me, the SS are dead sounding and lifeless. But the copper/bronze kick ass. Clean and Articulate. Great feeling, but always ready to dig in and chirp some harmonics!

The best, and they never wear out. I still have some of the same ones I bought at a music store in Costa Mesa in 1980.

Re: What are your favorite picks?

Strictly Dunlop:

. 88mm Tortex TIII's
.96mm gator grips
Various jazz III's

Just recently tried tortex sharps 1.35mm and I'm really digging them. I'm still trying to find the perfect pick. Maybe this is the one. I really wanted 1.35 TIII's but can't find them. Picks are such a big part of tone...

Re: What are your favorite picks?

I still keep going back and forth on my picks of choice. I decided that my pick testing wasn't fully representative of how I play all the time, because I had been doing all this at pretty much bedroom levels of volume. So I cranked the amp (a DRRI) and decided then that my precious V-Picks were now too bright and harsh. (At higher volumes the amp has different dynamics and things sound brighter). So I went back for a while to my old standby Dava GripTIps. Then I noticed a strange thing. The GripTips were very bright also. So I modified the settings on the amp (more bass, less treble) and things were OK again - in particular with the V-Picks. I've heard people say that the new reissue Deluxe Reverbs have an overly bright speaker - at least until it's got a hundred or so hours on it. That seems to be more obvious at higher volumes. Anyway, I'm back with V-Picks again. I'm especially liking the Large Round model. Compared to the pointier V-Picks it sounds more "thumb like", so I'm using it on my old school Tele equipped with flatwounds. Very tasty.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to update you re my continued search for the perfect pick(s).

Re: What are your favorite picks?

I love the ultex sharp .90, and I also use the blue or green dunlops. Those are all around the same thickness. I'll use pretty much any heavy pick, like the classic fender celluloid. I'm partial to those red confetti fender picks.

Re: What are your favorite picks?

I used the Dunlop Tortex standard 1.14mm for years. I flirted with the Jazz III but never really used it. Then about 18 months ago I switched fully to the smaller Jazz pick ups and never looked back. However, I wasn't totally sold on the standard Jazz III so I tried the Jazz III max grip, ultex, XL and finally settled on the tortex Jazz III pitch black. (Same 1.14mm) I knew they were right for me pretty quickly, great picks.
