On my mid 70s Marshall Super lead 100, I have a master volume added, and do a jumper from channel 1 to 2. I run both volumes at 8, and use 3 SPAX7 high gain pre-amp tubes. I also run an Analogman modified Boss OD as a clean boost and into an analogman Beano Boost treble booster. It is not very high gain, but it gives me my Blackmore sound which I love.

I put 5 as that's the closest I could get. 5-6 might have been more accurate but it was a 2-part question. I'm not adding extra boost at 6. But mostly I'm below 5. 5-6 is my MAX unless I'm just experimenting or bored...maybe fooling around with feedback. I may often be down around 2-3...depends on which amp I'm using though...and I may well have the master volume up as well. So "5" was as good an answer as any but it's not cut and dried. -Rod-

He said heavy music guys. So im assuming he started at 5 thinking noone who plays metal would use less than 5. Which is still a depends. My old Ampeg VL1000 has so much gain that anything past 5 is white noise. Its all too subjective to poll

Thats what clean channels are for? What the hell was the point of that remark. All thats been proven in this thread is that its subjective. You cant even get people to agree what "heavy" music is.

This is going to vary too much between each amp to make the poll useful. I run my 5150 at 3, sometimes 2 - that setting on a Recto would be terribly undergained for the same style.

3 and a boost with my 6505.
5 and a boost with my Recto.
5 and a boost with my Laney.
8 and a boost with my Budda.
4 and a boost with my Soldano.

I'm more of a blues and classic rock guy. I run my Mesas' (Mark III, Mark IV, DC-3 and Maverick) gain around 7, but I use a slight boost from a DOD FX10 Preaamp pedal that is always on. I use the LEAD channel of these amps (or the R2) for 99% of my distorted tones.

I thought I'd see more people using maximum gain.
