I know many bands get their equipment free from endorsements and stuff, but which band gets the best tone, endorsements and free instruments or not. And consider classic bands too.

Contrary to popular belief, endorsed artists usually pay something for their gear. They just get nice discounts. Unless they are the super-super stars like Clapton, Vai, or EVH. I don't imagine they pay anything, but most pay something. I know that Mesa Boogie doesn't give any of their artists free gear. They all have to pay. Even Petrucci!

For all around consistant sweet tone I always think of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks

AC/DC. Everybody talks about Angus but Malcolm is the real tonemaster in that band.

Gotta go with AC/DC. Angus and Malcolm have always had great tone.

I love Paul Kossoff's Free tone too.

SRV, Dire Straits, ZZ Top and Aerosmith always seemed to have great tone.

I don't think any stars have more gear than ZZ Top and Aerosmith. As bad tone snobs as we are, they are on steroids compared to us

Pink Floyd sounds great live !! And their Studio work was state of the art
for the time.

one of the guitarists plays thru a fender twin AND a vox ac30, and, well, there's too much other stuff to go over, they just have really warm sweet tone

There are a ton of bands that get a great tone for this style or that, but all around, I'd have to give my vote to the Allman Brothers. Clean to crunch to heavy overdrive, using picks, fingers, or slides, its always a gorgeous tone.

Smashing Pumpkins got it right IMO. Kyuss on the welcom to sky valley album. Now thats heavy guitar. None of this scooped mid crap.
