What bassist influences your playing?

Like the title says, what bassist influences your playing the most? Give a couple of tracks as a reference so we can check it out.

I would say the player who influences me most on bass is Gabe Nelson from CAKE. His style to me is a combination of funk and jazz, and gives the band a key part of their sound. I see a lot of videos on youtube talking about how bassists need to just hold down the root, and keep it simple ect. ect, but frankly as a songwriter that's not what I want in my music. My favorite bands have every player influencing the overall sound, and if you take one of the members our and throw someone else in, its just not the same.

Anyway some tracks to check out would be Short Skirt Long Jacket, Open Book, You Turn the Screw, Let Me Go, as well as their cover of I Will Survive. Honestly their whole catalogue is good IMO and I'm always down to listen to some CAKE.

Ronnie Cates (Petra)

Re: What bassist influences your playing?

Greg Chaisson (Badlands)
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Flea (RHCP)
John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)
Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)
John Entwistle (The Who)

While I can't play as well as any of them, the one thing they all have in common is hitting the groove and holding it together in the pocket with the drummer. There are moments where they'd step out of that but for the most part, there's a foundation that is there supporting the song with the drums.

As for tracks to check out, any of it. But for Badlands, definitely check out the Dusk album. A lot are familiar with the first album and Voodoo Highway but Dusk was released after Ray had passed away. Those tracks were cut live in the studio before his diagnosis. There's some great stuff on there.

The Holy Trinity: Jamerson, Dunn, and Kaye.

Larry Graham and Bootsy are next, once I venture outside the Holy Trinity.

Jah Wobble goes on my list somewhere.

Not sure who else. I'm not really "into" bass players so much, in terms of idolizing them and what not.

The Cake guy you mentioned is indeed good. I like him. (I have seen them too, back around '99 or possibly '00 at the Hollywood Palladium.) But if you like him, you must explore Jamerson. The Cake guy at his absolute best is simply doing a halfway decent Jamerson-type thing.

I saw part of Cake's set about a month ago in San Diego but the sound was awful. Could barely hear them from not far away. They were sort of hometown hero caliber when I went to high school in Sacramento.

Anyway I'll just say Robert DeLeo.

I’d love to say Geddy, but that’s far beyond me.

Forgot Justin Chancellor too.
