I have an Epiphone Les Paul Classic Plus and need new pickups because the stocks are garbage. I think I want a '59 in the neck position but im not sure about the bridge. I was thinking the sh-14 custom 5 or the JB. What should I get for the bridge?

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

What kind of amp are you playing through? Also, which kind of music will you be playing?

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

I play rock in general but mostly Classic rock. I am playing through a Marshall AVT 50 right now.

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

Try a set of 59's or maybe Seth/59. Both would sound great for classic rock tones.

Go the forum selection and look at the vault.

Great information in there.

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

Personally, I would listen to the Custom 5 in the bridge and the Jazz in the neck. I have been doing alot of installing of pups lately and IMO this is the best combination for the LP Mahogony/Maple body. It allows you a great starting point to get just about any tone. The JB is way to bright and lacks warmth for solo. The Custom 5 seems to be a good mid point between the Alnico II pro (great lead tone) and the JB (good rhythm tone). I like it anyway. I would like to try the JB with an Alnico II magnet. As for the neck, so far I think the jazz is a good choice for all around tone. Great acoustic sound on clean channel, pretty good dirty. This is all just my opinion from my experiences for a rock sound through a Marshall DSL 50/vintage cab and Les Paul STD. Good luck!!!

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

I voted for Custom V for the bridge as well. Try the Phat Cat (humbucker-sized P-90) on the neck. Fantastic cleans and clarity when overdriven.

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

I'd say go with a set of 59's or a c5/59 combo I have not tried either but people have said good things about them, and for classic rock tha would be mroe well suited. Also the c5 is fairly close to a real gibson standards pick up, the 498T i think...

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

I dont want a really bright sound, just warm and full.

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

I would say for classic rock C5 bridge and
either A2P or Jazz in the neck.

C5 is a great starting point for bridge pups....
eavenly balanced compared to CC, Custom, and JB

A2P.. Great cleans and it gets better with a little push in the tubes
....I dont know about High gain situations though.

Jazz...all around great neck pup...can do almost anything
...But I have never tried it with high gain.

my measly .02 cents,
Chris

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

Also, don't think the C-5 can't do other things well as welll, such as jazz, blues, or heavy modern rock. It is very versatile. I sometimes long for a thicker lead voice but pickups are perfect.

Lot's of guys love the C-5 for it's cleans but it is very clear in high gain and this is surprising for an evenly wound humbucker. Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but something like a Gibson Burstbucker Pro is wound uneven and this apparently helps with clarity but adds a touch of noise. I think the C-5 is very smooth, warm, yet still retains clarity under gain.

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

I am just looking for a warm and full tone with great cleans and something thats not too trebly/harsh.

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

Try the C5 bridge. You will like it! If not, you can send it back and try another... I have been going through exactly this for the past few weeks trying all kinds of pups. The c5 seems to get me real close in my paul. You can also add some eq to vary the tone...

This is why I did not like the JB...

Re: What Bridge Pickup Should I Get?

They are complete opposites so the decision shouldn't be too hard if you know what you want.
