Hey I wanna swap my PGb out of my les paul classic after my STOCK les paul special faded stepped all over it, the PGn is good but what would you recomend for the bridge position to go with the PGn. I need something with personality kind of similiar to the PGb but with more balls, sustain, and less/no spikey mids and fragile highs.I need a kickass lead tone with a ballsy, thumping rhythm, I don't wanna go ceramic or high output I wanna keep it generally PAF mid to low output. I'm thinkin a 59b or......you can recomend something. I really dislike messing with pickups installing/uninstalling and need something that will kick ass and not get worked by my LP special!!! I was so fed up with the PGb today it made me want to sell my classic and buy a plexi.....no!!! The PGb was expensive as **** so I should be able to get a good trade for it. forum brothers help me out, I HATE bad tone....

The C5 comes to mind...Has good tight lows, mids aren't obnoxious like the CC or the JB,good balance between highs and lows....Called "The 59 on steroids" You then have the option to try an A2,A3,or A4 magnet if the A5 C5 doesn't float your boat...

I was thinkin about that...but I have heard alot lately of people not liking it. How well do you think a 59 would do?

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

The C5 seems like a more powerful 59 to me, with smoother highs and more bottom end. From your initial post, I was thinking CC, but from your 2nd post, I think the C5 might be a contender.
You can convert a CC to a C5 to a Custom with magnet swaps if you want.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

its between the c5 and the 59b, I was just checkin out the vault and the descriptions of the 59b sounded really good, open sound, bright but not too bright clarity(key), no spiky mids etc. I really dig classic tones like thin lizzy and zep of course! the heaviest I play is alice in chains and I don't need that heavy. thanks for helpin me out, I'll listen to some clips tomorrow.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

I have a bunch of clips. The equipment used is in the song descriptions if you want to check them out, under "my music" link.
The 59b is definitely a good choice if you want to go for the "Jail Break" era Thin Lizzy tone. The 59 and Seth Lover are both good for Led Zep tones too.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

I use the 59B Trembucker with my PGn. I tried the C5 and liked it alot for high volume playing but didn't like it nearly as much as the 59B at lower, more realistic amp volumes. I just plain love the 59B...I've used it alot over the years. Through a nice Marshall it gets great Clapton/Cream tones and Clapton/Cream tones are my favorite humbucker tones of all time. EVH and Eric Johnson, I'm pretty sure, would agree. Lew

you did it with the thin lizzy comment :laugh2: jailbreak/cowboy song tones are probably my all time favorite. Thanks for helpin me out guys, I'll get that PGb in the trading post, if anyones interested in it its new only installed once a couple weeks ago, black plenty of wire left, I'm obviously lookin to trade for a 59b either black or zebra and maybe like $10 bucks with the trade since the PG is more than the 59 (I know I'm cheap :laugh2: ) its a good pickup it just isn't for me.

The 59 is always a great pickup, very versatile, and hard to beat for most music styles....Another pickup to think about then,is the Seth Lover? Stevo could give you some scoop on that pickup..

Go for the C5... for the tone you're looking for I think this will be the best. Its very flexible... if the highs are too much for you, roll down the tone... if you want it to cut thru the mix just turn it up... Its great for that Zep and AC/DC tone, and it can crunch too...

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

I've noticed with my PGb that playing past the twelth fret gets pretty thin and lacking in sustain, does the 59 do this as well or does it sing? also, what are the tonal differences between a5 mags and a2? thanks

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

A pickup loosing its character past the 12th fret is more a sign of a poor set-up than an "off" pickup, especially if the action is too low to compensate for an improperly set truss rod. Past the middle of the neck the string will fret out, getting brighter and loosing sustain.

Alnico II magnets tend to have a more mid strong voice while alnico V magnets are stronger on the top and bottom. Most people perceive alnico II magnet pickups to be warmer and smoother for this reason.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

I'd go with the '59. Based on your description, I think the C5 might be too high in output for you.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

its either seth, 59 or maybe antiquity(most likely not) it depends on which one will pair up the best with the PGn because I absolutely love that pickup, it has the most ubelievable clean I have ever heard. I think an antiquity wound slightly hot would be killer but I doubt I could find one. O ya, I doubt its a setup problem because I have relatively high action and the intonation is perfect...the PGn has great sustain past the twelth fret.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

Why not the Pearly Gates bridge?? I would say the 59b, PGb, or C-5. I like the C-5 and you sould use either. I personally prefer lower output pickups and let the amp do the work. I have used low output pickups for thrash with no problem. I love the versatility of lower output pickups.

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

I'm looking for a substitute for the PGb that I have...haha. I noticed on the tone description of the SD site that the 59 has about the same treble and mids as the PG but has more bass...does this mean a thicker beefier sound?

Re: What bridge to go with PGn in LP?

I just changed out my PGb for a custom custom in one of my pauls. I am so impressed how it sounds. When I play it I still cant belive how good it sounds. I have played the C5 but, I like the cc much better!!!!!! I know you will not be dissapointed with this pickup!!!!! To me it sounds like what you are after. If you need to know more about it feel free to ask me.
