What cables do you like better?

Hello,
I see 2 kinds of Build your own Pedal board Cables. Planet Waves and George L. Which do you guys like better and why?

Re: What cables do you like better?

I prefer soldered ones over these. I just make my own, amphenol plugs & planets waves bulk cable since canare or mogami isn't available near me.

Also bullet cables has the solderless package. Not sure if Wilde is in business still but they used to provide a 50ft cable or something in their package.

Re: What cables do you like better?

Pretty much same as Hank. I solder, usually using the right angle pancake plugs and Mogami 2319 cable if space is tight, or Lake Cable otherwise. I usually buy cable from Redco.com

Re: What cables do you like better?

I picked up the Planet Waves Kit and it's awesome. The George L's where not available.
The Quality is very nice.

Re: What cables do you like better?

I use a few Planet Waves patch cables and they're great. Haven't used George L's.

The rest of my rig is wired up with Mogami cables and they're also excellent, never had any buzz/noise issues in my 6 years with them.

Lava makes solderless cable kits too, I have a mix of those and George L's. I also have some 10 and 20 foot George L cables, I bought a new Mogami cable once A/B'd it with George L's and the GL was more transparent.

I use George L's on my board, too.

I think what you heard was related more to capacitance than resolution.

I don't know about you, but I like to work with cables that are at least 24-bit resolution, maybe as much as 48.

Re: What cables do you like better?

Sorry, I was rambling on 2 different thoughts as I seem to do these days. I tried GL and Mogami cables from my guitar to the amp (15' or 20', don't recall exactly) side by side and the GL was "clearer". Not sure what resolution has to do with a cable, and I didn't measure the capacitance, was just judging by ear.

Re: What cables do you like better?

No, man, you have it 100% correct!
Capacitance affects the high frequency response. Cables with less capacitance will appear to be brighter/cleaner/clearer/more transparent than those with more. Due to a myriad of other factors, one player wll say, that is truer to the sound I hear in my head pre-pedal board; others may say, that's too bright/thin.

Personally, I use Divine Noise pre-pedal board (high capacitance), it adds some body to the tone, and I use Lava Clear Connect II after the board, which is a very low capacitance cable.

A great, quick, way to hear the effects of capacitance is to use a 10 foot straight guitar cable, and then switch to a 10 foot curly cable. Night and day difference!

I was just clarifying my rambling in my post as related to Darg1911's post that I wasn't talking about interconnect cables but actual guitar cables. And yes, the GLs were probably lower capacitance which made them seem more transparent.

As far as the cable after your pedals, if you have buffers on your pedalboard, the capacitance of the cable after the board doesn't matter as much. And yes, higher capacitance cables roll off high end which can be interpreted as more "body" or "warmer". Hendrix often used old school long coiled cables which probably had huge capacitance (they didn't worry about that stuff as much back then) and it probably "helped" his sound by rolling off a lot of the high end from his single coil strats.

FWIW, I understand capacitance and reactance (frequency dependent resistance), I have a degree in electronics. I'm really not sure how to use "resolution" as related to a cable though.

Re: What cables do you like better?

I'm using George L's. I thought they were a pain to setup but they have the slimmest profile for packing pedals on a board and they have never screwed up after plugging and unplugging.

Re: What cables do you like better?

I'd love to try the Lava solderless but haven't had a chance yet. Of the first two mentioned, Planet Waves all the way. Their durability is decent, and I don't notice much if any coloration. OTOH George L's are a PITA to build and I find them to be very bright and thin sounding.

Re: What cables do you like better?

Although I do lots of soldering, the Planet Waves pedalboard solderless stuff is awesome. Especially because you can repair them anytime with just a small screwdriver. Although I almost never have to re seat them after initial instalation

The Lava ones are more of a PITA to build than the George L's, so they may not be your cup o' tea.

Re: What cables do you like better?

I solder my own with Switchcraft pancake connectors and Belden cable.

I'm boycotting wiring up my pedal board until I can find a product that I like.
