I'll definitely give a plug for Randalls. Great solid state amps. Not sure about their new line though, with the valve-dynamic crap.

Those clips sound really good... I've never heard an MG sound like that before.

MGs sound like crap. I've played about every model of MG there is.

If you want a NICE cheap half stack, get a Randall RG80 or RG100. Hell, I even want one.

It will suck man, the only good Marshalls have valves (tubes) in !.

I'm sure there are plenty of good alternatives, but my MG100DFX has never ceased to allow me to play my best.

I like the clean channel with the "PUSH"...almost 3D sounding.

the more important question is...

why do you want a half stack? do you actually need one, or is it for looks? or is it for upgrade purposes or what?

i know a bunch of combo's you can get for that price range.

traynor ycv50blue, gets you the marshall tone and versatile cleans that can do fender - vox. great middle rock type stuff, does the range from blues to early metal quite well, and can do most of the sounds between there.

crate v32 palomino - great blues amp, plays page and hendrix like a dream, perfect for classic rock and blues.

if you want a halfstack, look into Carvin MTS series, ive only heard great things about them, and they go for dirt cheap on ebay (well not really, but for how good they are, you get an amazing deal, they go for around 300$ on ebay on occasions if i remember right??) than a 300 dollar avatar 2x12 cab, and for 600 you get a kickass deal, or if you can find a head/cab deal on ebay probably for around 400-500.
