What computer software do you use to record???

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

I noticed that Sonar Guitar Tracks Pro 4 has been on sale for $49 lately and it looks good, but last night I was checking out the Reaper site and it definitely looks like the best bang for $60, and apparently there is no charge for updates.

Yeah, a license now (for 3.16) gets all updates through 4.99
Kinda nice.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

I used reaper when I had a computer to record with. Im noticing that alot of software is not compatible with windows 7 and OS X; mainly line 6; or at least not compatible for me...

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

i use logic, on my dual G5. my bands EP was recorded live on protools at soundfarm studios. i then mixed and mastered the thing using logic 8. nice stuff

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

For 'free' software, check out Reaper. It's shareware, but it can be downloaded and used (legally) for free.

This is 100% absolutely WRONG. Yes it can be downloaded without cost but after the trial period you are required to purchase a license. You CANNOT use it legally after the trial period without purchasing a license

Personal/Non-Comm is $60 and Commercial licenses are $250 I believe.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

I had used Steinberg products from 1998 until about last spring when I switched to Reaper. Very solid and capable app.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

I'm a long-time Cubase user, I found it pretty easy to get started on, still serves me well to this day.

Reaper is another good one for certain, lots of bang for the buck.

And if I had a Mac, I'd definitely use Logic.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

Do you find Cubase hard to use? I have the older LE version when I bought the Omega interface from Lexicon. I have not really been able to learn to use it fully.

Not at all; it's second nature to me at this point, and I really prefer it to both Logic and PT for more reasons than I care to list.

My bad on not getting Reaper's licensing info 100% right; I cba to keep up with that fisher-price DAW.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

I run Cubase 5 and have been using Cubase since SX3. I had a brief stint with Logic, and own Logic 9 as well as ProTools LE 8, but I do 99% of my work in Cubase and will for the foreseeable future.

For 'free' software, check out Reaper. It's shareware, but it can be downloaded and used (legally) for free.

+1, I also use Cubase VST 5.2, but for free software Reaper is great and offers a wide range of compatibility with VST instruments and other plugins.

I hated every minute in the studio when we had to use Logic, but thankfully I had Occide to do that ;)

Ableton LIVE! came with my Toneport but I don´t find it particularly intuitive, but I learned all my virtual mixing stuff on Cubase 3.x, so I´m used too the Steinberg interface and thereby biased.

Well, I dont want to spend $400-$500 on a program for personal use, and Reaper had all the features I needed, and works great.

I started on Audacity and felt the same way about Ableton, reaper is much more intuitive.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

Logic Pro 9 on the Mac. Have tried CEP/Adobe Audition on PC. Both good.

I have a few old favourite loops sources that I overuse. I like to mangle these percussive and textural sounds using Logic's Bitcrusher processor and/or Waldorf D-Pole filter plug-in.

Not massively keen on the amp-modelling plug-ins. Prefer to point an SM57 at a valve amplifier or take a DI feed from the M/B Quad pre-amp.

I just started on all this stuff, but I get a surprisingly good tone taking the line-out of my amp to the line-in of my Line6 Studio UX2 without any effects. And I think Reaper is surprisingly easy to use, although the metronome is pretty annoying.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

Started out on Audacity, its a very good program, but somewhat limited.
Tried out ableton live lite (line 6 edition). Didnt really like it. Tried reaper earlier this year, since it supports VST Instruments, and man, is it way better than audacity. So much more powerful, easier to get stuff done.

Reaper is not freeware, or shareware.

It is worth the purchase price. Its only $60 for a program that does a lot (if not all) of what an expensive program does

The day I installed mine, it popped up and told me "You have been using this program for 914657542 days" and telling me I should register.

I figured it was a glitch, since I had in fact been using it for roughly 0 days, and while I have to wait a few minutes upon every startup for hte nag screen to clear, it always opens, and it's been more than 30 days.

If it ever locks, I will definitely pay 'em the $60; they deserve it.

It won't ever lock, they state on their website that it won't because they don't want to work that way. I would recommend that anyone using Reaper without paying for it buy a license to support them because its rare in this day and age to find a company who isn't trying to screw us. :)

Ableton is horribly hard to use at first, I'll admit that.
It's one of those programs where once you get your head around it, the workflow is just insanely good. I tried using Reaper, which was easier at first, but ultimately the workflow wasn't as great as Ableton.

Re: What computer software do you use to record???

plus my reaper license allows me to install the program on my desktop and laptop, as long as I dont use both at the same time. I do most recording on the desktop, but need to be able to do some mobile recording.

And its worth the $60 no matter if it stops working or not.
