Re: What delay pedals are you guys using?
All of a sudden, I seem to have collected a passel of delays. I have two DD-3s, a DD-20, a DanElectro FAB Echo, a Line 6 Echo Park, and a Rocktron Short Timer.
For a really cheesy and cheap pedal, the FAB Echo actually works pretty well for '50s style slapback echo.
I haven't used the DD3s that much, and haven't even plugged in the DD-20, though I have had it for three years. Compared to the Rocktron, the DD-3s seem a little sterile. The big advantage of the DD-20 is the ability to program 4 presets, and the ability to toggle between guitar or line input voltages.
The Echo Park has tremendous processing power, and it is a lot of bang for the buck. My biggest criticism: it is HEAVY. Feels like it weighs 40 lbs.! Also, when I use it through the efx loops of my Mesa amps, I can hear some clock noise. I bought it used, so perhaps mine is defective??? I like it for the longer delays, and the tap tempo.
For most of the stuff I do, the Rocktron Short Timer is all I need. I think it is very warm sounding, and it's perfect for the rockabilly things I do. Totally simple. Big knobs are adjustable on the fly. Biggest disadvantages are the lack of a tap tempo switch and the large size of the box.
The Short Timer can be found for a street price of around $60, and I think it is a terrific value for the money. Highly recommended!
