What determines if humbucker mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Can you get different ones without going full custom shop?

I like to use TWO SCREWS per side so I can tilt a little if necessary. :)

Only one of the holes will be threaded I think.

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Only the holes in the middle are wide enough for the provided screws & the other two holes on each side of the middle hole are not tapped/threaded. If you want to use the outside holes you can but you will need to drill them out to the correct size & then thread them with a tap bit. I built a Fat Strat guard a few months ago & the guard I bought was a REAL Fender Fat Strat guard so it came with 2 holes on top of the humbucker slot & 1 on the bottom, Fender humbuckers are set up this way, I had just assumed that the two outer holes on the pickup were for this kind of situation? They are not! Honestly, I don't know why they put them there @ all??? Other than to use a guide holes but even then they are spaced way too close together to do the whole pup tilt thing correctly? Have you tried Fender wide range pickups? Off the top of my head they are the only pickups that have two holes per side but they are slightly larger than reg. humbuckers so you will probably have to do some work to your guard to get them to fit & pos. the body route as well? I ended up just getting a new guard with one hole on each side of the pickup, unless you want to put a couple extra hours of work into you're guitar I'd suggest you do the same, but I try to keep things as simple as possible!!! I hope this is helpful & your project turns out great!!!!

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

In the duncan range only trembuckers I've bought have had 3 holes and only standard humbuckers have had one hole.

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Yes, what Jake said about the Trembuckers is true, they are the only Duncan Humbuckers I know of that come STOCK with 3 holes predrilled but as I said before only the middle one is threaded & you would need to drill & tap the other two in order to use them. Sorry, I meant to say that in my last post. Even with a Trembucker in a Stratocaster with F-spacing I'd just use the middle holes & get a guard that only has two holes in it, not the two on top & one on the bottom kind unless you plan on using a Fender Humbucker? There are tons of aftermarket pickguards for Fender products out there that are cheap, great quality, licensed, & all the screw holes line up perfect so no retrofitting or shaving the neck pocket?

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

The two outer holes are for direct-mounting straight into the body.

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Ah, OK guys thanks for all your responses. - I get it now.
They basically all come with one threaded hole per side, the other ones are extra, or for mounting to body.

My pickguards will work fine, one hole per side. I would like to be able to tilt a bit, so I thought about adding holes to the pickguard, and mounting legs.
The pickguard is the easy part. - It WOULD be nice if I could get the legs already drilled and tapped. - I'll figure something out. - Definitely going with Duncans though! :)

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Just stick foam underneath the bit you want to tilt. I'm not sure 2 holes that close to one another would do what you want. Most likely the longer screw would just sit proud....

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Might just do that. :)

I'm using humbuckers now that have four mounting screws, & four springs. - They will tilt the p/u w/o any screw sticking up. :)

Re: What determines if the mounting legs come with THREE HOLES, vs. ONE hole?

Yes, I'd also suggest foam under the pickup, a lil on one side will give you the tilt that you are looking for & you wont need to drill or thread anything? What kind of pickup are you planning on using??? Oh, as far as the drilling and tapping, it's pretty easy to do & you won't need a P.H.D. to get it done either but it will take a few extra minutes & a few extra bucks if you don't have the bits. You can go to your local hardware store & get the drill bit, tap bit, & turn wrench together in a combo pack for about $8, so it wont break the bank???

If your springs are strong enough, you WILL get the tilt you want with the pup.

I might drill and tap them, doesn't seem too hard, or go with the bit of foam, - or not worry about it.. ;) - It is handy when you're doing your final tweaking..

They're going in a HSH Strat-type. I'm planning on a SH-14 Custom5 @ the bridge, probably a '59bridge @ the neck, and an STK-S4 or STK-S2 in the middle.
