When I was first learning guitar, my first guitar was a Peavey Raptor in this dark navy blue colour. I remember going to the local Long and McQuade for years after, and most of their beginner guitars, whether the Ibanez GIO or the Squiers seemed to come in that same navy blue colour. It's to the point that even if I saw that colour on an expensive high class guitar now I just kind of assume it's a crappy instrument.

And I don't think I can ever disassociate seafoam guitars from past forum member Seafoamer.

What does it for you, love it or hate a colour, and is there an interesting story or association behind why?

I have that exact same thing with black strats with rosewood boards. I just cant equate them with quality. Isaw 5 or 6 of them for £50 in local pawn shops.

Solid colors mean flaws in the wood.
Transparent colors mean the grain is good.

This I HAVE noticed, black guitars are typically less expensive than white guitars. It's almost, the darker the color, the cheaper the cost. Why dat is??

The awesome thing about black guitars is that's it's very easy to color match when repairing scratches and dents, whether doing it correctly, or just coloring over the damage with a black sharpie.

im kinda the same way with red. to me the most generic guitar in the world is a red strat. like if you asked someone who has never touched a guitar in their life to draw a guitar, they would draw a red strat

The most flawed woods get black, and other solid colors. Like if it has a knot in it, they paint it black. I've had reps from both Rickenbacker and FMIC tell me this.

Also, I think if they duff the finish, they can just paint it black. When I bought my Epi Les Paul Custom about ten years ago, it was marked on the back of the headstock as a second. I never found anything that looked like a real issue, except that in one place along the side of the neck, right next to the binding, was a tiny streak of red. I think they were going for a translucent red, and maybe it didn't go well. Basically, everything on the guitar except for the burst on the top was painted black; you can hide a lot under that.

Purple-blues remind me a lot of my third real guitar, which was the guitar that kept me playing. The first two were okay but just weren't me yet (hadn't swapped pickups or anything yet before and it came with duncans installed by the last owner) and my god it kept me playing. It helped me learn. It was some of the best tone I've ever had. Some screws stripped out eventually so I pretty much retired it. Traded it in May for an Epi LP Standard. I miss it but the LP was more for me and I didn't wanna deal with the stripping screws.
Love those purple-blue superstrats...

I used to hate black guitars and white guitars. Seemed too boring. My first few guitars were sonic blue, cream that had morphed to yellow, and sunburst. Even had a transparent green guitar. Ick! Oddly enough, I own two white guitars one black guitar and one poop brown SG Faded. The kicker is, they all sound better and feel better than my past guitars. And I'm slowly learning to like they way they look

Yeah, I believe that is exactly where some of these 'relic' finishes came from. What originally was covering up flaws became a selling point.

At least they weren't content in thinking that one perfectly sanded patch where the forearm hits is a convincing relic job. (If I ever see that again, I'll scream.)

Any paint i see on a guitar immediately sends me off to the hardware store to buy paint stripper.
