Whenever I read about what to use to clean fretboards with its always to a rosewood fingerboard. I just recently read an old guitar magazine and someone wrote about what to clean the fretboard with, and the mag answers but it says "don't use it on maple fingerboards!". I've read this in other places too. So what do I use to clean my maple fingerboard with??

What would 'ya recommend for a nitro finished maple board?

I've been using the edge of my pick to clean off the finger funk...

Re: What do I use to clean a maple fretboard??

i just scrape the big chunks off with the side of a pick. and then take a toothbrush to it. mine is unfinished.

For my maple neck'ed Fender I just use Dunlop 65(?) guitar polish.

Its cheap but effective and I've had no negative experiences using it over the past 7 years... No wax build up or residue to speak of...

You could always use Pledge. Soak the fretboard with Pledge and scrub it with a toothbrush.

Better yet, get one of those cheap $10 electric battery powered toothbrushes to scrub it with. I use that to clean all my fretboards.

I'd assume that might leave gouges & marks...

I've always used '0000' steel wool on unfinished boards be they rosewood, maple or anything else.

Finished is a different story...

HA! Been playing for close to 20 years and I've never owned a guitar with a finished maple board until about two years ago... now I have three!

I've been doing the same on the EJ... scrape any big chunks 'o funk with a pick edge & then hit it with Martin guitar polish which seems to safe on a nitro finish. I do that maybe 3-4 times a year... scrape bigger chunks during string changes.

I've always, until recently solely owned rosewood fingerboard guitars.

My piano teacher taught me to clean piano keys with gin or vodka, which is gentle to the ivoryI wonder if it would work on maple fingerboards?

I just use a damp rag and buff it dry.

On my older guitars with a NCL finish, I keep a coat of Carnauba Wax on the neck and fingerboard.

Unfinished is the way to go with maple boards, even if you run an increased risk of warpage.

When my maple board started to look like rosewood (which is a very slim exaggeration), I picked up a bottle of Jam Juice from my music shop for ten bucks and it did a good job.

Un-finished? Ugggh!
