What do you do when you've lost all desire

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
to play guitar?
i look at my guitar standing in the corner, and i wouldn't even know what to do with it if i did pick it up and plug it in.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

Ear training, learn theory, plug in some pedals and twist knobs until you hear some cool noises, learn new songs, write new songs, listen to new music . . . If all else fails, wank, fall asleep, come back to it the next day.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

Ya gotta have a certain drive to continue playing guitar through the years. Maybe you just need a little inspiration in the way of learning some new tunes or getting some theory down.

But you can't force it to be fun. If it's not enjoyable anymore, maybe it was never meant to be.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

Cry.

That's what I would do, anyway.

EDIT: But I think for me, I like to go back and listen to a band I love, but a song I haven't heard veery much by them. I sit down with my guitar and attempt to analyze it: Key, scales for the solo, etc

We all get there one time or another, if your comparing your self to someone else don't
there's only one you find your sound. This site has players that humble me but they also
inspire me find the later and you will be alright.

"tune up don't give up"

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

Not everyone was born to be a guitarist. Try bass, drums, piano, or some other instrument.
Listen to non-guitar music for a while. Big Band, Classical (Orchestra, string quartet, not Segovia cuz he'll just make it worse), or listen to stuff where the guitar is not a featured instrument like Funk or late '80s New Wave, or electronica. Maybe some Nine Inch Nails as well (though he does use guitar).

Go to a live concert... see one of the greats... Pat Metheny or someone, Jeff Beck!
They are both touring now...
So often after I see a live show I'm ready! Or a very good Live Music DVD, David Gilmore!

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

i've tried teaching myself theory and can only get so far and it ceases making any kind of sense what so ever. and forget about applying it to guitar. its like trying to cram a camel thru the eye of a needle.
cant really go see live music cuz of my tinnitus. not to mention, i look thru the schedule of what's going on in NYC and i never find anything that looks like it would be worth exacerbating my tinnitus for.
i guess i'll just leave it alone until i feel the inspiration

thanks for all the input

edti: maybe some new gear would clear up this "writer's block"

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

I tend to either force myself to play and end up really getting into it, just chill until I find the right inspiration, write music without playing it, or go back and listen to what initially inspired me to play. I was in a bit of a slump the past week, but I listened to some SRV I hadn't heard in awhile and totally wanted to play again.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

I've never really had that problem, there are times when i play a lot & times that i don't but i never see myself stopping playing ever.

How about the blue lozenge formerly known as Viagra?

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

See if you can find some music you love but haven´t heard in ages or something new to inspire you.

Alternatively go out, forget completely about guitar and look for some other past-time to keep you going for a while.

Then when you pick it up again you should have a fresher outlook.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

I googled "lost desire to play guitar," and this thread was the first item on the first resulting page.

True story.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

I'm guessing he's not the only one here.

Re: What do you do when you've lost all desire

I once stopped playing for 13 years. Won't do that again while my fingers still work.
