What Do You Guys Think About The W.L.H. Set???

Re: What Do You Guys Think About The W.L.H. Set???

Gibson has been putting pickups in Les Paul's for over a half a century. I think they probably have it figured out what the best pickup set for their guitars are and build them accordingly.

And Ford has been putting engines in cars for a full century... But look at how HUGE the Mustang performance parts aftermarket is...

I am sold on getting the WLH set for my new LP Studio, just hoping for a good labor day sale somewhere.

Lovely thought, but they make PU's so they have something to put in their guitars, and don't have to pay someone else to make them. It's a cost-saving measure. The people & equipment that made Gibsons in the golden years (Ted McCarty era) are long gone have been replaced by corporate-minded managers & investors. It's all about profit. Have you seen the retail price of Gibson' aftermarket PU's? There's a lot better out there for that price and less.

What a shame so many of them are wrong, and that many do not address the OP's issue at all, or that they show up in places they don't belong.

Others are wrong, you are right; the ego is alive and well.

I was convinced that I wanted a WLH set, but now I'm torn between the SNS and WLH.

I'm not sure I understand you. Are you saying that Gibson is in it for the money and the aftermarket companies are building pickups to serve mankind or something like that? I took a look at the prices on eBay for Gibson pickups and they appear to be in line with what the aftermarket pickups are selling for.

Really, the only way to form an educated opinion is to a/b the different pups through the same guitar and rig.

They've been building LPs for a bit longer, and now they're putting auto tuners on them. Case closed

Re: What Do You Guys Think About The W.L.H. Set???

Howabout WLH in the neck, and Hybrid in the bridge?

This is the set up in my LP Custom. They are very different pickups. Took me awhile to enjoy them. The trick was getting the tone and volume controls working together. Can get some great sounds out of this guitar. Am convinced the Hybrid is a very underappreciated pickup. It deserves its own matching neck pickup and am undecided how the matching neck pickup should sound.

Question: Can anyone compare the SNS pickups with the DMZ PAF Masters?

Have four SG's with the following pick ups:

WLH set

Jazz - 59/Custom Hybrid

36 Anniversary set

and lastly: The DMZ DP 260 and 261 PAF Master set with A5 and A4 magnets.

Of all these guitars, my overall favorite is the WLH set followed by the DMZ PAF Masters and varies depending upon the Saturday afternoon weather. These are all great to excellent SG / LP pickups. Again, it is a matter of personal taste and what works well with your set up.

Re: What Do You Guys Think About The W.L.H. Set???

Did anyone notice the set up on Joe Bonamassa's guitar in that clip? The pickups are down below the mounting rings, can't be the prescribed Gibson pickup height setting and yet what cool tones he gets out of that Les Paul.

You can drop a grand or two putting hypertension flywheels and dual bicarbs and whatever aftermarket parts you want in your Mustang. My VW will still perform as well as your Mustang within the legal limits. So the comparison doesn't work, you can spend all the money you have on aftermarket guitar parts but to play like Joe Bonamassa you need much more than a fancy rig as demonstrated in that clip.

First, I don't own a Mustang. Second, there is plenty that can be done to a Mustang to outperform a VW within legal limits. Third, there are no legal limits on a guitar so your whole rebuttal makes little to no sense

It was only meant to show that comparing Mustangs to guitars is not valid. As an aside, my VW will outperform any Mustang anytime anywhere within the legal limits.

Look at the prices on new Gibson aftermarket PU's. They're in the boutique range, and any boutique PU maker can beat Gibson PU's for tone quality. Duncan can beat Gibson with PU's that are priced a lot less. All of these other companies and individuals exist because they can make PU's that outperform the stock PU's on many guitars. If Gibson really made PU's a priority, there wouldn't have been all of these competitors in the first place.

The aftermarket PU makers have a passion for PU's and tone that Gibson doesn't. That's why they're successful. They live and breath the minutia of PU's. Gibson doesn't have that narrow of a focus. And Gibson doesn't have to, they're a guitar company, first and foremost. That's where their money is. They don't need to be specialists like Duncan and DiMarzio.

Re: What Do You Guys Think About The W.L.H. Set???

Please listen to the clips posted(in the first clip JB nails Clapton, Beck, Montgomery and others tone with just a Les Paul and Gibson pickups). Take these Gibson pickups as a baseline. In my opinion it becomes a matter of personal preference, not the quality of the pickup, when making comparisons of the baseline pickups to any other pickup. The aftermarket companies offer a wide range of alternatives but none of them are necessarily better sounding than the Gibson pickups, they sound different and that difference may be what an individual guitarist wants but they do not sound better. I think that in the short clip posted and several other Joe Bonamassa youtube clips it is clear that the tone achievable with Gibson pickups is world class.
