What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

I think mini-heads are neato.

I'll let you know about the 6505 MH after Dec. 25th. I own one, It's just happens to be wrapped, sitting under our xmas tree.

I do like the demos I've heard of the 6505 MH & the mini mesas. I don't have any plans of playing out with a band, so I think the MH will be perfect for home recording & such.

The Rectoverb 25 is my main live squeeze at the moment - it has a great clean channel that takes pedals well, I usually run in the 25W mode;

22-25 watts, tube, is about right for the small gig with a drummer-depending on speaker efficiency. 15 watts is usually not enough unless all you need is dirt or you not playing with a drummer.

GASsing for a Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36. I'm actually selling my Line 6 DT 25 in order to save money to buy it.

Do you mean one like my Mesa Boogie V:25 (That I love) or my Egnater Tweaker 15 (Both are nice)?

I like that we're seeing progress beyond toy amps and novelty products and are seeing more serious, professional grade high gain channel switchers that are sub 100w.

The best of which I think focus on sounding like a killer ~5-35w amp, rather than trying to pretend they're a 100w amp in a tiny box.

I hope this market segment continues to progress. While there is no replacement for displacement, not everyone needs an amp that's capable generating it's own weather system.

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

I do not think it is as black-and-white as "EL84 amps sound like x because they use EL84s, and big bottle amps sound like y because they use big bottles". That's a simple over generalization, an amp is the sum of its parts, which does include tube type, but also heavily depends on the amps circuitry. EL84s aren't inherently chimey - they're just used that way because Vox used the EL84, and the whole design stuck and hasn't changed much. Most of the lunchbox amps have similar power sections, where the signal breaks up very early, there's no negative feedback, almost all of the low end is shunted in order to avoid damaging the cheap small speakers in cheap small speaker cabinets that come with the amp, and to keep these amps affordable, they skimp on the transformers - going for cheapest rather than the most optimal, which does affect the sound. EL84s don't have to sound that way at all - case in point, the Fender Bassbreaker - it's just that the inspiration from Vox in designing EL84 amps hasn't died out. I like Vox a lot, but they do their designs best. A cranked AC30 can easily get thumping and sound full "even with EL84s" and an open back cabinet. It doesn't have any of the problems associated with EL84 amps, and it is THE EL84 amp. I have one 6L6 amp and one EL84 amp, a Fender Bassman and a Voc Night Train. Does the 6L6 amp sound bigger? Duh - it's in the name "Bassman" - it's designed to sound huge, with an entirely different circuit. It has a negative feedback circuit with a capacitor to avoid cutting lows, which makes it sound like it has a huge bass boost, the preamp stages shape the EQ to be low-mid dominant, the amp is class AB, it is obviously much louder, etc. It is a completely different amp design. I can't judge an amp based on just the tubes.

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

I've been thinking about getting one. My Mesa Single Rec is too much for my needs and i'm looking to downsize a bit. I really like the sound of the Peavey Classic 20MH from what i've seen from youtube clips as i'm looking to get away from a metal style amp (although my Single Rec is plenty versatile IMHO if you've got the patience to dial it in). And it's at a great price.

It's funny how when you're young and starting out your goal is to work your way up to that big stack like your rock idols. Then once you finally get there it doesn't take long to realize how impractical it is, especially if you're not playing out and don't have the opportunity to really drive the tubes. I downsized from a 100w head to the 50w Mesa, from a 4x12 to a 2x12 cab. And it's still way too much for my needs. But one of these 20w or so range amps will sound sound mighty nice through my closed back 2x12 cab.......especially with the RK5 Fly Rig in front of it that I have sitting under the christmas tree. :)

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

While I've only heard them in YouTube videos, I love the concept of the mini-Peaveys. Especially the little Classic 20. There may be one of these in my stable soon.

Btw, I don't think the "lower wattage for bedroom wanking" thang works. My little 5-watt Tubemeister 5 can easily summon "the man" if I crank it. Which is why I'm working on an iso-cab project.

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

^ Wow, I didn't even know about those. That's a great idea.

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

The "little big amp" thing is a marketing ploy.
There are big wattage, big tube amps and there are low wattage small tube amps.
They sound and feel different.
It is purely a matter or amplitude. Amplifying bass frequencies requires a lot more wattage. You can build a nice amp that can maximize what it does for its wattage, but if you only have so many watts, there is only so far you can go.
You can make a low wattage amp sound bigger by running it through bigger speakers, but it wont sound like a big amp running through the bigger speakers.
Some low wattage amps sound killer. You can get some really nice low wattage amps.
They just will never sound like big wattage amps.
By the same token, you can't really get big amps to sound like little amps.
They can both be great depending on what you need for the job and what speaker configuration you are using.
Having said all that, you can definitely gig with small wattage amps as long as your speakers are up to the task.

I joined the lunch crowd. I only got to play with it for a bit this morning but the thing is loud going through my Marshall 2x12. I am digging the tone big time. Very gritty and open at least so far with the Tele that is the vibe I am getting.

Those greatly benefit from a better pre-amp tube.

Congrats,its a fun amp.

Dang, unless you are physically trying to get something grab and go small, then just put that money into a good Hotplate or Weber mass and just crank your big amp and dial back the overall volume while still getting the big tube sound.

I've got several 15 watt amps that use EL84's. Nothing wrong with that tube, all dependent on the circuit. I still prefer 6V6 over any power tube out there but that's just me. Even in the 6L6 family, there's a huge variety to choose from.

For my it is about getting a variety of tones at a budget price. The Orange sounds different than anything else I own. The portability is cool also.

Folks seem to do the same thing with pedals. I have zero room to talk about owning too many amps! Rock on witch yer bad self.

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

The Krank Rev Jr. does not run EL84 tubes. Honestly, that sets it apart from many other smaller heads especially under the mic, IMO.

My Krank Rev Jr.'s dirty channel just barely pulls off full metal band volumes where the drummer's hitting hard, if I must be completely honest, not because it's not loud enough, but because running so loud, it gets a bit too brown-sounding and loses its kind of metal tightness, but it's clean channel with a boost does a killer Plexi impersonation when cranked up loud!

Re: What do you guys think of the new generation of little big amps ?

As an owner of a 6505+ 120 watt I know that unless I crank the post gain above 2.5 I never really get the full character of the amp. Every sound guy up and down the country tells me to turn down! I'm interested to know how a mini 6505 20 watt would fair in a medium sized venue. Right now I prefer to turn the master (post-gain) up and keep the pre-gain below 5. 6505+'s are known to have gain on tap and I don't need as much gain as I would say, with a Marshall head.
Transportation appeals, as the smaller sized amp head allows you to travel with it easier. Storage is also not as much as a burden.
