What Do You Think About AVT50 for hard rock

Re: What Do You Think About AVT50 for hard rock

Short answar: Yes, in my most humble oppinion

Long more complicated answar: what is your budget and what do you fancy tonewise. If you want nice cutting metal tone there really is only one modulation, the numetal one. So try it out, and take a look at those new vox´s, the ad50vtx if I am not mistaken, they are supposed to be for the metal fans. I want to try one of those myself.

Vox's regular AD-line of valvetronix amps (like the AD50VT) does Marshall better than Marshall does with the AVT series, plus you've got all those other models and effects. The big AD60vtx blue face series vox is on sale right now for around 500, (american musical supply) which is a steal. There is a new line of Vox Valvetronix coming out now called the XL series, geared more for high gain, although I think it still has 2 clean models as well.

I had an avt275 that I sold recently and yes the avts can do hard rock and metal. The main thing I didn't like was at high gain the amp sounded fizzy and notes didn't ring out clearly. The clean channel was surprisingly good, in fact I'd say it's better than the clean on my current amp. But as the others have stated, there are better options out there in the same price range.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend a Marshall AVT for anything. There's plenty of better amps around in that same price range.

The VT are good apart from the fact that on anything past the UK 70s the amps starts to fizz.

In general I agree with this statement. However in my current band the rhythm guitarist uses one and it sounds pretty good. The side note to that story is that he runs an Eq before the amp, an Eq in the loop and plays it thru a V30 loaded cab!!!

If you can afford something else I would go for it, however this amp can be made alot better with a little EQ.

I played an AVT for a long while... it's OK but not really great - and you can buy a better solid state amp for the same price without the Marshall tag. If you're in the USA I guess you can also buy a good used tube amp.
While the 1st lead channel (crunch) is not too bad the metal lead channel is horrible - it always seemed to have relatively less volume and the tone was pretty boring - I've stopped using it after a few tries.
BTW, they are not really reliable.
