What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

Jeff_H

Dean Hardtail Fanologist
I've got a chance to pick this up for $395 including a hardshell case. A dealer at the guitar show had this today. The only difference is the one I can get just has "Collectors Edition" at the 12th, not the year. Also, the wood surrounding the sound holes is not the different colors like this one, but all natural. It m\ust be a newer year model because the onboard electronics include the built in tuner.

I'd been wanting a Dean Acoustic, but something about this one made me think. Opinions?

Hi Jeff -

The price sounds like a good deal.

Do you want to play this plugged in or truly acoustic? I'm no expert on this, but IIRC those guitars are OK amplified but kind of lame un-plugged. Also, is the intonation allright? (Can't see the bridge very well, so don't know if it's compensated or just angled.)

Here's an exact pic...except Ovation lists is as a Celibrity Deluxe??

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

Is this a super shallow or medium bowl? My Adamas has a medium bowl, and sounds great unplugged and awesome plugged in. I really love the Ovation sound though- add some delay and reverb and it sounds divine.

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

This one is a medium bowl....it sounded very nice from what I could tell at the show...in a big room filled with 200 people wanking all different styles of music. It seems like a good deal, just trying to confirm that.

I didn't look that closely at the bridge, but I kind of figured that I'd probably have to upgrade to a nicer bridge and nut.

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

Jeff, I'd jump on it. I love those Ovation's. Especialy the neck, with that hard V. You might run into some trouble changing the bridge though. Piezo pickups are layed under, and the bridge has to rest EXACTLY on top of the strip, not leaning to one side or another too much, but right on top. The bridges are usually split also, so that you can have a more even response between the E,A, and D strings, and the G, B, and e strings.

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

Those Ovations are great, love the neck, love the warm and articulate tone.

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

I love ovations. best neck I've ever played on an acoustic. Lacks low end a bit, from the ones I've played... My next acoustic will probably be an ovation.

That said, I think they're ugly as f***...

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

dont kick a feild go, dont go with the martin! (martins sound like crap to me, dont know why, very dull).

personally, i dont like how ovations sit in my lap when playing, basically because they allways slide out! however, if u liked the sound and playability, id say go for it!

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

Jeff, I've got an Applause....the cheap cheap model of an Ovation. It's just so-so acoustically, but sounds nice plugged in. When I bought my Guild, I was gonna sell the Applause, but wound up just restringing it in "Nashville tuning"....has a really nice 12-string ring to it.

Anyway, they're pretty nice sitting down, but the bowl takes a little getting used to...pretty good price though!

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

Martin...MUD? Try one with fresh strings next time. Or listen to the acoustics in every album you've ever owned. MUD?

Re: What Do You Think About This Acoustic?

I've never been a big fan of Martins, although they are great guitars. I really love Taylors. I'm just not sure I can justify the $1200 outlay. I'm going to give it some more thought.

Martins kick arse, but right now I'm in love with an Alvarez MIJ grand concert style acoustic. It has a solid spruce top, mahogany neck, and solid rosewood back and sides. It is THE best sounding acoustic I've ever heard. It kinda reminds me of a Taylor with a 75% discount. :laugh2:
