What do you think about trading a PRS CE24 for a Splawn + a MIM Strat?

I've got a near mint CE-24 that I've been trying to sell around $1500 for a long time- This price seems a little on the low side on Reverb and I'm not in a hurry, so I haven't had a need to move.

However a local musician contacted me via Craigs list and would like to trade a Splawn Street Rod combo + a MIM strat and the numbers seem to be good.

On the other hand, I know nothing about Street Rods- For comparison, I'm a blues rocker with a Peavy Classic 50 4*10 for warm tones and a Music Man HD130 for clean twin stuff.

Thoughts on value, resell and if I'd like a street rod?

hELLO. tHE SPLAWN IS A HEAVY METAL AMP AND DEOSNT SEEM TO FIT THE BILL FOR YOUR STYLE.pLUS ITS A BIG RISK TO SHIP And SELL AN AMP VIS-A-VIS A GUITAR.( I'm sorry for caps)...for example, Ive been tyring to sell or trade a highly desirable USA made 6505 fr two years for a reasonable price here on my local Craigslist wihtout any results. I will not risk selling and shipping online. I think you are also coming up short in the trade by 2 or 3 hundred dollars, depending on condition of the Strat.Wait to hear from others on this as this is just a quick appraisal and I am no expert.

I have a Splawn Quickrod. The Streetrod is the combo version at 40 watts, iirc.
The Splawn amp line is based around the modded Marshall tone popularized in the 80’s and forward. Although I LOVE this amp, and it absolutely is capable of much more than rock/hard rock/metal it probably wouldn’t be my first choice for a blues amp.

I love classic Marshalls, but Van Hallen is the closest I get to metal and it sounds like this is a gain monster or is it voiced to thin for classic rock?

Too bad, because I loved the 4 footswitch concept.

Listened to a lot of tracks and most are metal- there are exceptions like the strat section at the end of this one-

More compressed than my normal sound and it seems hard not to breakup with the clean channel- seems like people are trying tube swaps to cool that channel down a bit.

I live off of reverb, but would be easy to put a pedal in the loop-

But I'm starting to think this won't work.

I can’t speak to the clean channel on the street rod but the Quickrod’s clean channel is amazing. In the early days of Splawn amps the cleans left something to be desired but the newer model have been tremendously improved upon. If this one is the 4 button footswitch, it’s a newer model. The clean channel should be great.
These amps are actually very Van Halen inspired. In fact he is Scott’s (Splawn) guitar hero. Although it’s certainly capable, I personally don’t see this as a “metal” amp. It’s a Marshall with lots of gain.
Do a few “Quickrod” searches on YouTube. There are some low gain demos too....but this probably isn’t the amp for you at the end of the day.

Unbelievable, I made the trip to check it out and the Splawn is incredible!

GtrJr, you nailed it, this clean channel is beautiful sparkle with a strat, gear 2 is great for early stones and easy to get into Blue Oyster Cult or ACDC wiht 3rd gear.

Congrats!!! I just came from rehearsal with the Splawn...it truly is an incredible amp!
One piece of advise ....it can be a picky amp about certain things...like true bypass vs. budgeted pedals specifically a wah.

What speakernis installed? A Creamback or Small block?

I have a Quick rod and it is actually a versatile amp. Most people buy splawns for that hot rodded marshall tone, but it has a good clean and covers some ground. I wouldnt rule it out, but would def try if you can.. I think you said he was a local musician right?

The small block is a great speaker for that amp. It’s a 55W Greenback style speaker.
I’d recommend your delay/reverbs etc through the loop.
Also, the loop volume control is a phenomenal feature. You can crank up the volume on the front panel around about 10-11 o’clock and use the loop volume to bring the overall volume down to a reasonable level.

Yeah it was a long drive, but he paid for Gas, so it was worth the effort-
So far it's magical with the MIM strat- doesn't like my LP/SG very much-
Starting to think my single coil may have made a new friend and will make more introductions around the stable tomorrow

Yeah, that's my favorite feature so far- I was jamming at a lower level than my other amps can handle and it still sounded good.

Oh...couple of other things....
If you still have the original power tubes in this amp take note of the rating number that Scott has marked them. When it’s time for a retube just order through the website and make a note of he number. I’d recommend that you still bias, but you will be really close to where you need to be with the same # tubes.
I’m not sure about the Streetrod, but the Quickrod likes to be biased a little on the cold side. I learned this after a LOT of experimenting and finally I talked to Scott about it and he set me straight.
My Quickrod has the Drop B feature, iirc the Streetrod is Drop b by default. It lowers the plate voltage to give more “sag” to the amp. I love it.
So according to Scott, he said to bias at 30mA with the Drop B setting off, then when you flip the switch, the plate voltage drops and the mA rise to about 40mA. You probably should check with him about how this works on the street rod.
My mistake was trying to bias it like my 2204....on The hot side. That’s not going to work with this amp. It makes it sound grainy and harsh.
Scott’s customer service is beyond spectacular...last time I biased (a couple of weeks ago) I emailed him about it around 7:30 pm. I was expecting to hear back the next day.....he responded 10 minutes later and told me what I needed to do.
Lastly, post your NAD on the Splawn fans forum....that place is pretty slow lately and it could use a new face!
Plus there is a sh*t ton of killer info there so you can get familiar wit your new amp.
