What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

Yes they are real, that seller buys all kinds of new guitars and make a profit by parting them out. Look at his items for sale and you'll find the missing parts from these guitars for sale à la carte.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

Has anyone tried to add back up what it would cost to put one back to stock?

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I was thinking of picking one up for a project. I want to throw on a Kahler, Spezels and a couple of chrome covers then finish it off pearl white.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I've bought two Gibsons recently from the Stratosphere, a 70s Tribute SG in historic Cherry, and a 50s Tribute LP in Wine Red. The SG which sells for $999 cost me about $750 total, and the LP ($1099 I think) will come in at about $850 including a B7 Bigsby. Of course YMMV depending on what parts you get. I've bought quite a few Fender parts from the Stratosphere too. Some people think they are overpriced, and maybe they are, but I rather like putting stuff together and being able to configure it how I want even if it ends up costing more in the end.

I've been tempted and, I'm sure that eventually will pick one up to build my own way eventually. Just can't afford to do it right now.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I'd prolly rather buy new,at least you have a warranty/return policy...

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I like the look of that SG.... price isn't too bad. That site does strip down guitars and part them out - I've looked at several of their guitars etc before. Some say they ask over the top prices but they don't seem too expensive to me.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I have bought parts from The Stratosphere. Never an entire parted out guitar.

In my opinion, unless you are gassing to mix 'n' match non-standard finish and hardware colour combinations, the prices are prohibitive.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I don't know...not such a great deal. You could buy those SGs new and complete for about $650. That's only an additional $150 for a set of Burstbuckers (BB1 and BB2), tuners, bridge, stopbar, pots, switch, jack, wiring, etc. That's a WAY better deal imho.

Here they are at Musicians Friend...http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-2013-sg-tribute-60s-electric-guitar

If you don't mind dot fret markers and different pups, you could get the SGJ model new and complete for only $429...http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-sgj-electric-guitar

Musicians Friend has many more models on sale right now too...http://www.musiciansfriend.com/gibson-sg

Now that Gold Top is a different story. If I didn't already have one, that would be my choice. A coat or two of gloss nitro and I'd be dripping drool all day!

Apart from the 490R/498T pickups, the SGJ for $429 is an excellent deal. (And I write as somebody who only even likes SGs when they have P90s!)

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

thanks for the insights! demina's SG above looks good to me - great job!

but SGs are a weird bunch, some can be had for cheap like guitardoc is saying - I always get confused why some SGs are high, some are low - a lot of them look the same to me (unless it's something radically different like an all-gold one or some crazy devil burst like gearjonesers).

I always like the idea of chipping away at something - get the body/neck, then over time get the other stuff. kinda takes the edge off of dropping $800 all at once. I guess one could just save over time as well, but that seems harder, haha.

I sent him a message once and received no reply. So much for that.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

For some reason this technique seems to work so much better with Bolt-On Fenders in my mind... :)

Bad timing on my part I guess! I did check the prices before I bought. The SG was $999 at Sweetwater!

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I got a couple from him, it meant that the guitar passed under the $1000 threshold for import duty, which wouldn't have happened otherwise (and new sellers of course don't post internationally). In the US it would likely be a bad deal what with all the great prices you guys have on gear.

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I purchased a US Fender Strat Rosewood neck from thestratosphere about a year ago....Replaced my maple one...

Re: What do you think of these project Gibsons on eBay?

I think they are ripoffs. Used SGs at the moment are rising in price when new SG prices are going down.

EX:

Why TF would I pay $980 for a USED 2007 SG Standard or $640 for a Stripped 2011 SG Standard when a NEW 2013 SG Standard is $900? It is going to cost ~$250+ if you buy quality parts.

Don't even get me started on used SG Faded models for ~$500-$600 when the replacement models are even cheaper.

Sellers need to get their **** together.

hell yes, it's a sick deal, I have played the **** out of my SGJ - just pulled the 490's and PCB board, left the toggle switch in, spent about $25 on 4 CTS 500k pots and a switchcraft input jack, a little soldering - and voila - you've got a great sounding gibson for next to nothing. Plus, after you've changed everything out - you can easily sell the 490 set and PCB board on ebay and make enough to cover the cost of new pickups and most likely also the cost of the pots & input jack.
