Glue + pressure + time = BETTER than new.

Truer words were never spoken. I've seen countless SG's with broken necks, but the thing is they only break once. The best way to make sure you don't break a neck is to break it yourself.

I went to a guitar shop in West Virginia and the luthier actually advertised his "quartersawn neck treatment". He'd saw the neck into quarters, glue it back together and he claimed it to be much stronger. Not that I'd let him do it to my own guitar...

String with glue and a C clamp. Maybe some blocks/rags. Any luthier should have these if you are worried. And it take s way less glue than you would think.

Glue + pressure + time = BETTER than new. This should be a < $50 fix. IS that shallow or mid? If mid get pro fixed. Either way sweet guitar. Get it fixed!

It's got a mid-depth bowl on it and yeah, it's a pretty sweet guitar. I played it for a while yesterday and even with the action a little high it plays very nice and sounds great. Hard to beat a mid or full bowl ovation for throwing sound!

I remember taking him shopping for this little gem back in '87 or '88. He wanted one similar to the Applause acoustic my folks had bought for me back in '84 and he found this one for a pretty good deal used.

Get yellow Titebond glue. Mix it with enough hot water to make it runnier, String it (or turn the rod, whatever) so the crack opens up wider. Get a syringe and shoot the glue into the crack, then clamp it so it shuts. Use Titebond, NOT CA (Superglue) And definitely not Gorilla Glue. The GG “foams up” and will force the crack open wider. The CA will be impossible to get back out if you have to redo it for whatever reason. The Titebond can be removed with steam if it’s ever gotta be redone.
I personally fixed my moms Ovation the exact same way, after the guitar store guy told her to just leave it at the store (and buy a new one, of course &#55357;&#56900 I fixed it in 04, and it’s still fine today. Well, other than the crack in the top, but I haven’t messed with that yet)

Well I dropped it off today when I was in town and I expect a call in the next day or so with an estimate. From there we'll see if my brother feels like coughing up the dough or not.

I have to admit to having mixed feelings about working on it myself. Acoustics make me nervous for some reason when I work on them, but at the same time there's a part of me that wants to give it a try.

We'll see...

Well, in case anyone is curious, I took it to a local luthier and he quoted $60 to get it fixed. I told my brother to go ahead and go for it, that it was well worth the money. Should be getting it back in about a week.

Just so you know, he’s going to do pretty much what we’ve all been talking about on here… open the crack a bit, get some glue in there, and clamp it down for several days. If it were my own guitar I probably would do it myself, but since it would’ve been my first time doing something like that I didn’t want to experiment on a guitar that wasn’t mine.

Several days? That is nutty! Titebond can be unclamped after 24hours on stressed joints and 30mins on not. I can't see how acoustics would be any different maybe he is using a different type of glue.

You should have just done it yourself that way you could have been all like ''**** OFF!!! remember that time i fixed your guitar?''

Oh, I wasn’t going to say anything. I’m used to seeing pink and purple.

Sounds like you’re on the right track with the repair. Sometimes hiring a pro really is the best value.

I really like the finish on the CS257!
I was watching a video about Ovation a few weeks ago, and if I remember correctly the diameter of all of the little sound holes added up equals the diameter of their single soundhole.
I thought that was pretty neat.

Thanks, and yeah she’s a looker all right. I dig the green because you seldom see it.

I didn’t know that about the soundhole diameters, but it makes sense. My CS257 is a shallow bowl, so it’s a little quiet unplugged but I’ve played full bowl styles with the multiple soundholes that throw an amazing amount of sound.

Oh yea I love green very much! I havent had a green one since my SeaFoamGreen Kramer, but Ive been wanting to do one so bad lately. Im kinda diggin Sherwood Green with a single humbucker mint green pickguard...
Another reason that caught my eye aside from the color is the fact that I really want an acoustic. I havent had one since I was 18, believe that or not!! (I had a Carlos Dreadnaught with a brass nut that I swapped for a Kramer Focus 1000)

I used to pretty much play acoustic only, but have been mostly an electric player for the past few years. Still love to grab my acoustics and play ‘em though. You owe it to yourself to have both... they truly are different instruments, despite the similarities. There’s a raw magic in an acoustic guitar that just isn’t the same on an electric.

No idea. I haven’t played that guitar in probably 10-15 years and he doesn’t know either. He was over a couple of weeks ago telling me about how the “strings were like they were too high off the fretboard” (he wasn’t familiar with the term “action” [emoji6]). I figured that, being an approximately 30-year-old guitar that had probably never had any adjustments made, it just needed a little truss rod adjustment. I didn’t discover the crack until after I adjusted the rod a bit when I wasn’t getting any results.
