What Do You Think Of Those Genz-Benz Amps?

Re: What Do You Think Of Those Genz-Benz Amps?

Do you think it's a good choice or would sound out of balance with the 1954 & 1960 pickpups in the neck and middle?
You mean would the SSL-5 be a good balance with the vintage Strat pickups in the neck and middle? Heck yeah!! It's not so hot that it blows them away like a hot bridge humbucker would. And the SSL-5 sounds like a single coil, not like a humbucker. It just doesn't have that ice-pick high end, and it has a thicker midrange.

The other two pickups in the guitar I had plugged into my El Diablo last weekend were Alnico 2 Pro singles. I flipped to the neck pickup, turned the tube contour knob counter clockwise, and out came this gorgeous, warm, fat smooth sound - like a fat P90 but it retained that Stratty snap. This is a tone that I must record in a song!

I am not a metal player. I have had an El Diablo 60C for several years. Love the amp. I do not play metal though. Clean to 80's rock with a lot of blues and country.

Brent Mason was playing a Black Pearl a lot the last I heard. He is about as country as it gets today.

Kosh: don't get me wrong man... I've played a lot with mine and just love it. If I would've wanted a mesa I would've bought one, the diablo's tone is a bit distinctive and that's the way I love it.

ystein: I've played the amp with both 6L6 and el34... There's a good difference between both. I don't have clips though but you can do a search for my previous review of the amp though, I did give a lot of details.

And you're right, folks tend to give up quite quickly when it comes to dialing these amps... they're a bit more work but they do sound killer once you find the sweet spot (IMHO of course)...
