What electronics would I need to pull this crazy wiring off?

Hey guys, I'm going to try to attempt the unthinkable... a Les Paul and a Strat in one guitar.

Here's what I want to do:

pup config: H-S-H

electronics: 5-way, push-pull switch for splitting the humbuckers

shorthand writing: t = tapped, hb = humbucker, sc = single coil, pos = position

here's the combinations I'm looking for:

untapped: pos1 [neck hb], pos2 [neck hb, sc], pos3 [neck hb, bridge hb], pos4 [bridge hb, sc], pos5 [bridge hb]

coil tapped: pos1 [t neck hb], pos2 [t neck hb, sc], pos3 [sc, t neck hb, t bridge hb], pos4 [t bridge hb, sc], pos5 [t bridge hb]

Essenially, the untapped mode will be my "Les Paul +" configuration and tapped mode will essentially be a regular Strat configuration. I hate it when guitar companies make their guitars automatically coil tap.

I talked briefly about it to a friend of mine and he said something about a mega switch? Would all these positions work fine if I had the right electronics? I'm trying to avoid all the mini toggle switches as that gets sloppy and confusing looking.

I guess I'm looking for some kind of a 5 way switch that would have enough lugs to offer all these positions.

Anybody have any ideas? I know if this can be pulled off, I will have the ULTIMATE guitar (which of course will be revealed in due time with sound clips and appropriate photos :D )

Yeah,That sounds like a job for a Mega-Switch. I just got my Stewmac
catolog in the mail today. They have a Super-switch now That's suposed
to give you more options than the mega ?? I never tried a mega switch
But from what they say all you need is a solder iron and a Imagination ?

Remember to solder in the mandatory coffe-brewer:laugh2:
All those options.......man well I look forward to hear the results:)

This will definitely work with the Megaswitch. Please note that you need the Model E for that:

I don't know where to get it, but I know Schaller distributes them as "Schaller 105S"

I don't know if all three PUs parallel is possible with MegaSwitch E. Although I never tried I guess that's possible with the Fender SuperSwitch or Eyb MegaSwitch Model M

I won't be doing the soldering. After screwing up my Dean Chafin Del Sol... I'm willing to pay a professional to do it for $150. :burnout:

The wiring is nuts, but my buddy is a professional player and makes custom guitars, so guess who I'm going to to do the work ;) (on my Dean he drilled perfect holes so that better electronics - the CTS pots - could fit).

These options are what will make this guitar awesome and truly unique. Can't believe I haven't seen this elsewhere, probably because most pickups wouldn't sound good with it (my pickup choices will be revealed soon as well ;) )

Thanks psy for the recommendations, I looked at Stew Mac and was confused with the choices, so thanks for turning me to the Megaswitch E. I need to consult with the guy about the middle untapped position, as that is one I'm not sure can work (as was mentioned in this thread). If I can get both humbuckers tapped along with the middle single coil, I'll have a perfect middle position strat sound.

I think KMC might be onto something with the super switch... lots of options are a must so perhaps this will do the job fine :) ... thanks!

another (quite easy) option for your "all3PUs-on" wiring would be: use a 3-way switch for the HBs, one push/pull-pot for HB-splitting another push/pull for switching on/off the middle SC

Re: What electronics would I need to pull this crazy wiring off?

Hmmm.... that's a good point. The wiring would probably be much easier to do that way.

However, the only flaw would be the need to do drilling to my new guitar. So hopefully, there is some way I can get this to work out, because the ease of use for getting so many different tones would be mindboggling :eek2: :)

no need for drilling if exchange existing pots with push/pull. The models from Allparts have a bit narrower and longer shaft than common in strats. Thus I already used it on pickgards as well as directly attaching directly into the wood.
