What flanger?

So I have no experience with flangers but what would be a good one that doesn’t force you into prostitution just to afford it? Maybe around $150.

Re: What flanger?

Neato that sounds like what im looking for just a flanger that can sit in the mix. Ill find a place to try one though. Thanks alot for the help man.

Re: What flanger?

I have a vintage Ibanez Flanger pedal (that yellow one that they made a reissue from) from the 80s in pretty good shape too. Its the best flanger pedal I heard and does have a somewhat subtle sound, but put it in front of a plexi and it thickens your sound up a lot and makes solos roar. I actually like the Boss one too if you are on a budget, that one gives you more sounds (less traditional of course), but a fatter sound too. But go for the Ibanez if you can, im not sure how much they cost.

Re: What flanger?

I have a late 80's Boss Flanger that i have been extremely happy with since buying it in 1987 or 88.... unlike my other Flangers this Boss units boosts the signal slightly when i step on it... At least it seems to by my ears....

I also own a bunch of DOD flangers i picked up used and dirt cheap.... Not bad sounding and they offer a wider range of weird Flanger sounds then the Boss, and i also have a newer Ibanez Tone Lock Flanger/Chorus that is OK but not amazing....

The Boss is quiet and does exactly like i want.... and you can buy them cheap used...

Re: What flanger?

The Ibanez is a cool Flanger as are the old Yamaha units...personally I liek the old Electro Harmonix units...the reissues are pretty damn good and can be had for a good price used.

Re: What flanger?

I really like the electric mistress but god that ac powercord just kills it for me cause when i gig i really dont want to worry about that.

Thats the one I use and I'll be honest, I love mine...you have to choose your battles!:laugh2:

Re: What flanger?

I love the fact that i saw a photo of The Atomic Punk's guitarist using a Boss Flanger on his board..... He does a great job of copying VH and that flanger works well for him

Well im gonna try as many as possible and we will see which one passes the test. What about the rocktron hypnotic flange? I have the short timer and its very solid and well made (well aside from the knobs) any one got expirence with these?

Re: What flanger?

I never cared for Rocktron FX...not that they are no good just not what I wanted...I like the old ADA Flanger but it's not for everyone, I really like my Electric Mistress Pedals (I have had 3 of them...2 original and 1 reissue) I also like the MXR but I hate the reissue of it, the Ibanez units are cool. to be honest those are the only flangers that come to mind that I really liked...

Re: What flanger?

i despise flangers, maybe a tidge too extreme for me, i just can't seem to find a pracitical purpose for them.

Re: What flanger?

I tried the EH Electric Mistress, a Boss Flanger, and the Ibanez CF-7 Chorus/Flange....and they all probably have their places at times in certain songs. I wanted something a little more transparent than those I mentioned and decided to try a MXR-M117 Flanger, and I have to admit that I'm impressed with the sound and the effect itself. The sound almost has a touch of chorus in it when it sweeps through the top of the frequency, and the effect is a good quality sweep with nice controls for tweaking. It's pretty much what I was looking for, and is very usable for a variety of styles.....but I still wouldn't mind trying one of those ADA Flangers one of these days.

Re: What flanger?

The ADA Flanger is so fun. If you open it up, there's little trim pots all over the circuit board, that are fine tuneable, so you can find the Q point on every aspect of it's sound. It's one of the greatest pedals ever made, IMO. I'd kill to find an ADA Final Phase, but most sellers know what they have.
I got mine from a guy who was dead broke and scrambling for cash, and he sold it to me for $85, since it had scratches on it, and no power supply. I love it.

That's a rippin' deal, 'bro. Being able to tweak a pedal with trim-pots like that is really a plus. The ADA is definitely the top of the heap, I'm sure, so I'll be keeping my eye out for one of those deals, too.... :cool2:
