What fret size do you like?

I'm contemplating getting my main player (an EMBB Silo Special) refretted and I'm gonna go for a bigger wire. The stuff on there now is about as small as I like to go and I fear that if I got the frets dressed, they'd be too low to be comfortable for me.

I tend to prefer Dunlop 6105 size or just a little bit bigger than that. Not 6100 big, though, that stuff is like railroad tracks. Medium jumbo, I guess?

So do y'all have a preference for fret size?

Re: What fret size do you like?

I tend to not care that much...I guess it's wasy to say medimum jumbo but I can do just fine with vintage Fender wire and even some jumbo wire. The guitar that Scott's working on for me has 6105 wire in it and I really think Im gonna like it based on just looking at it and feeling the neck and frets in my hand.

Re: What fret size do you like?

6100!!!! i love gigantic frets. so much so that im considering getting my near-fretless 80's bc rich i bought used refretted. while this doesnt sound odd at first- a refret would cost a good $50 more than i paid for the entire guitar

Re: What fret size do you like?

i like low flat frets...kinda like the old gibsons....Heritage kinda still does theirs like that

Re: What fret size do you like?

You know, I couldn't tell you. I've been playing guitar for 13 years and have no idea. Is 'PRS gauge' an acceptable answer? :laugh2:

Re: What fret size do you like?

I'm a 6105 fan. It's gotten bad enough that I'm selling my other fret challenged guitars; and have refretted my Strat.

Re: What fret size do you like?

i'm partial to jumbo and extra jumbo my self. kinda makes me play with a lite touch. i dont think i even hit the fret board.

Re: What fret size do you like?

I like large frets, preferrably some jumbos, but the medium jumbos on my carvins seem to do me just fine. I can't stand vintage fender wire, my CIJ has em and it's the main reason I'm parting with it.

Re: What fret size do you like?

I like narrow, tall and stainless.

About half my guitars have been refretted with Warmoth SS6115 (.107" x .052")

If anyone knows who actually makes Warmoth wire, please let me know. I really like the shape of it, and would like to buy it in bulk at a discount.

Re: What fret size do you like?

Ultra omega super jumbos. The biggest, tallest, fattest, whatever. Dunlop 6000 are what I order on all my parts-necks.

Plus scalloping kicks a little extra ass on top of that, for good measure.

I currently have 6105s (although I must have gotten the bigger end of that fretwire size, since it's as tall as some 6100 examples I've seen, the only difference being that it's narrower).
I don't like the feel of wood under my fingers at all and want more control of my vibrato.
From now on, all my future guitars will have nothing less than Dunlop 6000s, with possible further scalloping on top of that.

Re: What fret size do you like?

Most of my axes are med-jumbo, but my Les Paul's got some 6100 wire on it. I don't really care much bout fret size unless it starts getting too short...my old MIM fender uses some pretty tiny fret wire and thus gets played the least out of all my guitars.

I was thinking about buying a neck quantity of that and having a local shop refret my Silo with that. I have 6105's on my Strat and it played great when it was operational (currently being refinished) but I wouldn't mind a larger fret.

Do you do your own refrets as well? I'd love to be able to do that... would save a crapload of money. :D

I wish I had the time to do my own start to finish, but I have a friend who does everything but the ends and level/crown. I send the neck off and he cuts the radius I want, installs the frets and sends it back. I do the ends, and let the tech do the rest.

Most of the time, the tech will make the ends look nicer because I am lazy and not a pro at it. :D

Re: What fret size do you like?

Dunlop 6000 on everything electric, the biggest you can get without using actual railroad tracks ;)

Re: What fret size do you like?

My 3 Warmoth have SS6105 frets on them. To date I have no complaints. I think I generally prefer a taller wire, I tend to slide over the top of the really low stuff, with the taller wire, I can at least get some purchase on the strings.
