What fret size do you like?

Re: What fret size do you like?

What did 1999 Lonestar Strats came with? I like them the best, but thinking of going just a tad bigger ...

Re: What fret size do you like?

I'm not too picky about the fret size. Bigger is better than smaller. If anything I prefer to stay away from the Fender vintage fretwire. That's too small for me.

Re: What fret size do you like?

6000's as big tall and wide as I can get! I can get by with at least 6105's but prefer the full on Jumbos. I can't stand little bitty frets!

Re: What fret size do you like?

I like narrow, tall and stainless.

About half my guitars have been refretted with Warmoth SS6115 (.107" x .052")

If anyone knows who actually makes Warmoth wire, please let me know. I really like the shape of it, and would like to buy it in bulk at a discount.

Don't know who makes it, but maybe you can get it cheaper from Luthier's Mercantile?

Dunlop 6100s. There are a few exceptions, but very few. I have a Gibby V that was refretted with 6000s. That's a railroad tie! And my "wife" SG has the 70's style Gibson Jumbos from a refret.

Re: What fret size do you like?

Why not have a fretless with the fretboard made out of fretwire metal!

I think john from RHCP did something like this.

Just lower the nut to the height the strings would be at if you had frets.

And no... I wouldn't like this.. Just an idea.

I played a Vigier guitar at a local boutique called Tone Merchants that was a fretless and it had a metal fingerboard (I say fingerboard because there were no frets on it) that was polished to a glass-like smoothness.

Re: What fret size do you like?

Whatever's on my Gibsons I reckon. I'm not too picky when it comes to all that stuff like string sizes, fret sizes, and all that crap. I just plug in and play. About the only thing I'm particular about is my fingerboard radius.

Re: What fret size do you like?

I depends on the fretboard radius.

In general, I like Fender vintage small frets but can only deal with them up to 9.5". I "grew up" on an Ibanez Blazer, that probably explains it.

When things get flatter I can't get a good enough grip when bending. With small frets the next strings I bend against have a tendency to slip below my fingertips. Sometimes that works better, sometimes worse, depending on temperature and such.

The flat and wide Gibson frets I was into big time long ago, but now that I actually pay attention to where I'm bending I like regular jumbos.

I have the super-huge jumbos on a scalloped neck, that's definitely too much. But my Chinese Les Paul has them, too, on a 12" and I've got to say the frets look a little un-Les Paulish but the grip is there.

Re: What fret size do you like?

I'm not particularly picky either but I think medium jumbos is the general area I'm at.

I like the frets my Washburn MG-122 has the best, Ascension said that is 6100 but to me it feels somewhat lower than that (unless it has been lowered from levelings and recrownings). Whichever the case that's exactly how I like it.

A tad lower than true Jumbos and about as fat.

Re: What fret size do you like?

i prefer larger frets.... 6105's and up... i get by with smaller frets on my older MIM Fenders but i can't say i love them... 6100's are nice for me... i do love the fret size Fender is now using in the new MIM and MIA Standard models... they are just right by me...

Re: What fret size do you like?

Its a guitar i relly wanted, but couldnt afford, that was sold recently on the trader forum.

In that case, what was it?

Nevermind, found it...
I never knew Black Limba could look so good.
Gotta keep this in mind...
