What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I use Claytons, I really like their texture/feel. Before I went to heavier gauge strings & downtuning (10-52's, drop-C), I used their .80's. Now I use their 1.26's & love 'em. I tried going a little thinner (1.0), but I got too much flex with them; I don't feel as accurate. If there's an audible difference, I couldn't tell you, but I don't feel right without that thicker pick. I actually bought the 1.26's to use with my bass. I tried them out on the guitar one day, & that was it.

i stick mainly to .88 (green) tortex. i tried switching to 1.0 (blue) for a bit cause i liked the feel of em, but it (at least to me) had a noticable decrease in attack and sounded less focused i suppose. i also used .88 ultex for a while, and im not too big on that material. though i like the ultex triangles for bass, but i play mostly with fingers anyhow.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

A heavy pick gives you a bigger/wider tone and allows you to play faster because a pick that has give to it is like trying to hit a baseball with a flapping bat.

I agree. I use nothing but Fender Heavy or generic version of the same thing.
I like the consistency of always using the same pick. Good analogy with the bat. Thin picks are a joke, and mediums feel like swinging a rubber bat. Heavies are the best for me, for all styles and all guitars. Picks that are thicker than that have the attack rounded off too much for my taste.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I just started using 1.5mm Dunlop Gator Grips, occassionally 1.5mm Delrins, I like the way a thicker pick feels, it seems like i have more control. I used to use regular Fender heavies, but have decided I like the thicker ones for now. I still use the heavies on acoustic, or maybe a medium for just strumming.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

.73 Ultex is great, they're very stiff and I like my picks being stiff.

.88 Tortex is good but not quite as good...better for strumming though.

.88 Tortex 'clipped' with the sides made straight...much better, lol. Less pick noise and easier to fly in between strings with it...

1.14 Gator Grip ... good for power metal and other extremely fast stuff on an open string.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I use heavies and their pick attack is full, but softer sounding due to it's cleaner overtones... and maybe thier material- acetal. Whatever that is? lol

Also they have a quick release- not too much in the way of friction. I play hard, heavy, and fast rock. The pick attack allows me a smooth and non-intrusive tone- which allows a more even sounding attack and not too much in the way of a wanton intrusive pick sound. If that is how you like it.

Built for a cleaner sound, fast picking (including very good non-alien feeling non-slip grip), and still a full sounding attack.

I don't pimp 'em in my sig for nothin'. :D

Yellow Dunlop .73's on all my electric's (solid, hollow & semi-hollow's)

All my guitars have GHS 11's on 'em.

Styles :

Pshycobilly
Classic & Blues Rock
Fuzzed-Up Garage Blues

Hope this helped you . . .

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

now i use 2mm picks (dunlop gator, balck colour), but i always used thick picks, once 3mm as well (those trasparent purple big stubby from dunlop)!
i tried also lgihter picks but then when i play i feel like if there's something flobby under my fingers. the minimun is 1.14mm.
i feel also that those big triangular picks are cool too, but i can't find those w/ 2mm thick!

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

Doom/Sludge/Stoner/Grunge & Thrash....my pick attack varies, though I prefer to pound on the strings when I can.

Green .88m Tortex Jazz IIIs for thrash.

Purple 1.14mm Tortex Jazz IIIs for most other stuff.

Red Jazz IIIs 'cause I ran out of the first two and I had a bunch of these lying around.

I find the green Tortex to have the right amount of attack sound for alot of metal. I find the purple Tortex have too exagerated an attack for fast rhythm work, but I prefer the extra dynamic control of the heavier purple for slower stuff and stuff with less gain.

The red Jazz IIIs are cool too, but they don't always have enough attack noise to sound defined once the gain and/or speed is piled on.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

dunlop 1.0 mm nylons, I have a relatively light attack.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I used Fender mediums since the 70s. Since I discovered the Dava a few years ago, it's all I use..I love 'em. Great rhythm flex and work fine for lead when choked.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I use the 1mm Dunlop nylons. The black ones.

They are much floppier than the tortex ones, and for the same kind of feel, I'd probably go for the yellow tortex. They are probably about as stiff.

I think I have a light-ish attack. I see people come and attack the strings much heavier than I do, but rarely see people who attack with less force than I do. I have never broken a string in 2 years of playing either. I guess that means light attack :p

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I play with a light attack on matter what pick I'm using. If it's a .5mm floppy piece of plastic sheet for acoustic rhythm guitarists or a 3mm stubby, I just have a light touch.

At the moment I use black Jazz IIIs, but I'm waiting for some Jazztone 205's to arrive.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

I use all from 0.71. to 1.0 mm. (Dunlops, Ibanez)

Funny, but the shape of the pick is one thing its hard for me to get used to.
Standard 0.88 green tortex are simply too large for me. I feel them unbalanced when playing. I find a teardop shape better.

Since I play metal, and use a lot of gain, so I dont need hard attack.
I just caress the strings, so I can play very fast solos and swift-pickings without getting my hand tired.

When using thin picks I feel much more reaction from the strings, almost like they are live, and its as if I can play faster:)
With a thicker pick I feel like having more control..like "Do as I say....you string! :) " style.

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

Those orange tortex (about 0.66 is it?) so pretty thin, my attack is usually very hard, and i play primarily rhythm. I like the amount of flex they have withough feeling too weak, i wear them down pretty quick, but im not fussy about playing with a worn down pick, and picks are so cheap anyway its not a big problem.

I also like them being orange, it makes them easy to find in my house as they stand out so well, this is very important to me, as the best pick in the world is no use to me if i can't find it...

Re: What gauge of pick do you use? + Is this linked to pick attack

Just like Jolly, I use the 1.14 Dunlop Tortex. Used them for years, they feel perfect on my hands.

I have some Jazz IIIs around, they're sweet for soloing, but they feel very odd when riffing. Plus they wear out very quickly! I only use them when needed.
