What gauge strings did Jimi Hendrix use?

Re: What gauge strings did Jimi Hendrix use?

As stated, he reversed the nut on the right-handed guitars, so the low E was on top when he flipped the guitar over to play left-handed, on his personal guitars (as it would be on a regular left-handed guitar). But, he was also able to play a right-handed guitar upside-down, with the low E on the bottom, if he was at a jam and borrowed someone's guitar. But his own guitars had the low E on top.

Re: What gauge strings did Jimi Hendrix use?

Roger Mayer seems to think that the gauges he quoted were a "custom" set, when in actuality that is the gauges of the regular Fender Rock'n'Roll string set from that period (and still makes today). And it has been noted by many musicians that Jimi changed one or two strings from the standard gauges in that set. Mayer was great with electronics, but I don't think he knows as much about guitars and strings. This is the problem with pinning down exactly what Jimi ended up using, and it's a good bet he may have tried different string substitutions at different times during his career (especially when he started tuning down a half step), although I have never heard of him using heavy strings as SRV later did.
