What gear did EVH use on 1984?

I think this album has some of the best tone. Anybody know exactly what he used?

Just from memory, that's about the same time that he had Kramer make him a copy of his striped guitar and may have used that on part of it. I think he was still using that beat up 100 Watt Plexi that he used for the first 4 albums, but I'd have to go back through the Guitar Player mags from that time to be sure.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Some people claim he used a Custom Custom back then in at least one of his guitars, but no one really knows for sure. I believe that was the last album recorded with the striped guitars and Plexis.

Who cares what pickup he used....the sound is mostly from the amp/player IMHO. GJ...come agree with me!!

I thought it was a 50w... Go figure.

But, back to topic, Eddie also used a Gibson flying V for "Hot for Teacher" and "Drop Dead Legs", cuz he needed the 2 volume knobs for stutter effects.

Re: What gear did EVH use on 1984?

He wouldhave used his old plexi and most likely a 59 pickup or similar in the bridge.

But i agree that most of his tone came straight from his magical fingers!

Top Jimmy was recorded with a Kramer Ripley guitar. That's why that song has all that cool stereo panning. 1984 is also the first album Van Halen recorded in Eddies "5150" Home Studio, so that makes a difference as well.

Re: What gear did EVH use on 1984?

I was born in 1984... so that obviously made a difference too.

:laugh2:

He used a Flying V on Hot For Teacher and I think House of Pain ( I am not 100 percent about it on that track). That album is one of my favorite tone albums as well.

Yah, I think 1984 was VH's farewell to the tone world. LOL Soon afterward, a bug crawled in his ear, ate his brain, and left him dreaming about Steinbergers and Peaveys!

No matter what you think of Ed's tone on CD's, you've really got to understand that if you're not knocked out by his tone, you need to stand in the same room as his rig to get the full effect. Imagine going back to 1984 and standing stage left, listening to Ed's rig. That's the tone most people revere, not the many tones he had, which were usually manipulated by mixing engineers on CD's. Those sound good, but seeing VH live is where the 'chills' set in.

If Ed comes back strong this year, it'll be exciting to see first hand, again, why he was voted best guitarist for something like 20 yrs in a row in every rock music magazine. Just think...he achieved all of that when he'd only played guitar half as long as he has now. Ed's older and more matured. Just wait and see him now!

Yeah Gearjonser, I too hope they come back strong this year. Without question Ed is my favorite player of all time. When you mentioned about him being more mature, I think thats why I liked Van Halen 3 so much. It may not have been "Van Halen" per say, but I think Ed really took a chance and streached his compositional wings on that album. Man, to be able to reach inside yourself and come up with something thats totally differant.....wow, what can I say? What a gift that man has.

the truth is, even Ed only hints at what Ed is capable of on VH records. I saw him playing a baby grand in a hotel bar for his (and Wolfgang's) amusement. It was like like witnessing Keith Jarret crossed with Stravinsky. Unbelievable.

The guy could revolutionise the tuba if he so decides. A genius musician/composer of the highest level masquerading as a good-time rock guitar hero.

Nah the Frankenstrat had a few more songs left after 84.
The Plexi got a major overhaul before Balance.
And I think it was 59's he used on 84.

They were mostly 59's. At that time Eddie was a BIG Allan Holdsworth Junkie and he played very legato-like on 1984. Listen to Drop Dead Legs and Girl Gone Bad for an edgier and rockin Holdsworth-like tone.

Re: What gear did EVH use on 1984?

I saw VH last year september in Dallas and it was an honest to God religious experience- He played his a$$ off! The best guitar playing I've ever seen- And I saw SRV's last show!(Which also kicked a$$)
