What gear do you like but others hate?

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Middle pickup alone on a strat. Many don't care for it but I find it very useful for a bit more brightness without some of the ice pick the bridge pup of a strat is known for.

Yet another post I totally agree with. The middle pickup is my "normal" position on a Strat. I switch to the bridge for treblier than normal, and to the neck for bassier than normal. I don't use the in betweens (I actually converted to three-way switches on a few of mine, in order to make pickup selection easier).

I use this a lot on my HSS Jackson (DMZ Area 67 in the middle) for a more classic sound compared to the Gravity Storm and Injector in the other positions

And I thought of another one I love that a lot dont:
The old USA Reverends

Also a middle position fan on strats. And I hate the quackers 2/4.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

I'll chime in that I love the Middle position on Strats...sounds even better IMO with a single coil sized humbucker in the middle a la HHH ;)

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Guys, same. I love the middle position strat single. Awesome for heavier blues, rockabilly and outlaw country stuff. Clapton uses it a ton as well.

I absolutely love this pedal but everyone else says it is crap. It is perfect for the "brown" sound and sounds great on runs. You would think is would be muddy but it actually has a solid tone.

Single coils for metal. Specifically, in a two guitar band, one guy playing humbuckers and the other playing singles. Nothing sounds better.

Monster Cable
Silverface Fenders
Chinese preamp tubes
Gibson pickups like 57's and BB's.
Fender Am. Std. bridges
Korean DeArmond guitars
Klon Centaur (so many despise it because it's collectible value went through the roof, and also refuse to believe the original sounds and feels better than the many clones)

There are always going to be naysayers about any piece of gear.

Love my Gibsons; love my Mesas; love my G&Ls; love my Peavey, Carvin and QSC PA gear; love my Martin acoustics. Yet, to many players, these brands are over-priced, poor quality, too complicated, or simply don't say "Fender" on the headstock.

Really?

Yes, I prefer tubes, but I played a SS amp for more than 20 years, and there are some very good SS amps out there.

But the one item that really stands out are my two Music Man Sabre II guitars. Leo Fender designed these in the late 1970's, and to my mind these are his high-water mark in guitar designs. They have some really innovative features; many are just subtle refinements of his previous designs...from the tuners to the electronics down to the strap buttons. The guitar featured low impedance humbuckers and active electronics; and a fantastic new bridge design that morphed into the G&L Saddle Lock bridge.

They were never popular, introduced in the era of Floyd Rose vibratos and pointy body shapes, but I love mine.

And they helped pay the rent for many, many years.

Oh yeah. Joe reminded me. LOVE my monster cables. Not durable but everything else sounds harsh to me...mogami..george Ls, spectraflex, whatever.

Screamin' Demon.

Well, not everyone hates it, but I read too many complaints about being too weak, plinky, and that it should be called the Chirpin' Cricket instead.
What can I say? I love my Chirpin' Cricket. Takes low tunings well and it has great definition and presence. And it cleans up wonderfully. All things I like.

Modeling amps. I think they are great for recording/practicing/playing at home.

I've got a Behringer ADI 21
Acoustic Modeler-Eq-Driver-DI.
Has features only found on more expensive pedals.
Sturdy and sounds great.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Just seeing the word behringer makes me feel sick. I have zero experinence with them its just the hype..

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Don't believe the hype.

Re: What gear do you like but others hate?

Behringer ultrabass practice amps are the best bass practice amps I can find. They're the only ones with the top end and midrange I like.
