Re: What Gibson to get?
Now the lecture - and I'm just going to be honest here, and tell you what a lot of guys are thinking and not posting. You may have noticed you are getting a lot of suggestions for things that are not what you want. Let me explain that....
What we see is that you basically want a real "Gibson" because it says Gibson. You seem to mostly not like Gibson designs. We can't tell for one second why you think this is important. Other than it says "Gibson" on it. A lot of the guys here steering you away from stuff also happen to own one or more Gibsons that are probably all more than 2-4k in value. why would they say that???? The guitars you are looking at in that price range are not investment grade instruments. So if you think they will increase in value - they won't. They are WAY overpriced for what they are and if you go to sell them, well, see eBay for what they are really worth. If you think it is because they are Gibson and they must sound good - think again. Many here will tell you that they have played complete sonic turds that cost well over $2500. Most here range the pickups and are not really fans of the 490/498 combo. It's ok at everything, and good for nothing mostly. Again - opinions vary. I honestly don't get the impression that you have actually played most of these guitars you are talking about. Well, we all have. Most of the guys responding for 20+ years and have owned most of them, or all of them.
Now - I don't know you - so if I'm wrong, all apologies. This is just what you SOUND like to me. Just an impression, perhaps from a less than well communicated point of view. You sound like a kid who has been playing a couple of years, has way more money than chops, and has read that Gibson is the $h!t on the internet, so now you need one. After playing a few - you have decided that they really are not for you, but still think you need something with a Gibson badge for no good reason. Hey - it's America and being stupid because of marketing is one of our great freedoms.
Everyone here is telling you that "real" Gibsons are over-priced, not all that, and that there is nothing magic about them. They are telling you that in spite of you seeming to not like them, you are insisting on getting one anyway because of the look. We are all saying there are better guitars as players, and the investment Gibsons are the ones you don't like and are not looking at.
So please explain why you REALLY want a 'real' Gibson. I have four of them FYI, and about 20 other guitars. Some of which play as well, or better at a 10th the price. FYI - I have only bought one Gibson that is an "Investment grade" instrument. It is the ONLY new Gibson I have ever bought. It cost well over $2k.
Talk to me...
This is amazing, and so true. I'm not one to get all offended about people making assumptions so don't get all worried about that.
I'm actually a kid from Australia that's been playing for 7-8 years now, I'm not an amazing guitar player or anything but I can do a few things here and there. However I have developed a hobby for working on and restoring all types of guitars, which means I have got to play a few types of guitars.
I am an investor and from what you guys are saying no Gibson guitar in the $2000 price range is going to gain value, which I totally understand, but being a Gibson I would hope it wouldn't lose value either.
I want a Gibson for the reason of:
1.) It's a Gibson, duh like best rep on the planet
2.) when people buy guitars, the mostly search Gibson not a brand like heritage or another "not so popular" brand so it would be easier to sell
3.) I have owned a high end EPI SG and I absolutely loved it, so a Gibson SG was kinda what I was looking at but for what I was spending I wanted to consider my other options.
4.) I have tried real fender teles and strats and I love Teles but they don't have the same ballsy sound as a Gibson which is what I want.
5.) and like most guitar players at my age, it's kinda like a dream to get a Gibson, like from when I started playing I knew about them and wanted one but now I appreciate them even more and can actually appreciate how good they can be.
Look I'm not super fussed on precise sound or anything like that I really just want a label and a nice good quality guitar. As I said I work on them so I can level the frets or swap the nut if I have to but I'm all about originality so I would to get the Gibson growl out of the stock pickups!
And I 100% agree on getting it second hand, brand new is way too expensive. After more research though I'm really keen on the '61 SG, for the reason of the tapered neck and pickups. I found one for $1500 AUD which is a great price, still looking into it..
I know that some things aren't for everyone but after playing an EPI SG and liking it so much I can imagine I would like a Gibson one. And I have worked really hard to save up, not some rich kid that gets Marshall amps and Gibson guitars [emoji23] this is my first time saving up enough to get a real guitar like a Gibson. Don't even have a stack amp or more than 2 pedals [emoji23]
If it gets to the stage that I hate the sound of the pickups and want to swap the pots out and stuff I probably will but I'll wait until that day comes and deal with it then.
And all those guitars were in US, I'm AUD so $2000 doesn't stretch very far when it comes to those sort of guitars in the US [emoji23]
Cheers and let me know what you think.
