what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

Re: what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

HOTLICKS copper #005 - i used them years ago then quit ( hard on strings) was using snarling dogs (red) with holes i punched in them.. i broke my right thumb about 4 months ago & could not use anything but the 005 hotlicks, infact i had to tape the pick between my thumb & index finger for the first 6-7 weeks(to keep from dropping), hotlicks are not being made anymore , but i have purchased 9 packs this yr (3 per pk ), so unless i lose them i'm set , they dont wear out, & i really dont care about the string wear anymore, strings are made every day..

Dunlop Gator Grip 1.14s exclusively for the last 15+ yrs for electric. That pick IS me. I tried Jazz IIIs, but they were a bit too small for my taste and nothing compares to the GG 1.14 for me.

Mostly Tortex .73 for acoustic and Tortex 1.14 for bass.

Blue Chip.

Generally Tortex Yellow, Green and Purple depending on the mood. I have a Jazz III which I'm slowly picking up on, and Fender mediums and heavys when all else fails.

Playing acoustic has opened my eyes to how picks can affect the tone. On distorted electric its mostly feel, clean is a bit of tone change but acoustic can really bring forward the bright attack or mellow it out.

For years I used Fender mediums. But I would either break one or wear it out in a day or two. About 15 years ago(i think) I switched to the Dunlop Tortex .73 and then moved to the .88 The .88 I like a bit more overall as the added stiffness works better for me, yet on occasions I use the .73 when I play acoustic, but its rare I generally play acoustic guitar with my fingers and electric with a pick. A few years ago I found a site that would print my own picks using the same material I like ( http://intunegp.com/) I ordered a gross of picks and I still have well over half of them. The advantage of the Tortex material is they do wear but they don't break, so if you really want to get down to it you can actually file down the pick as they wear.

Delrin or Tortex jazz sharp, 0.50mm

Red Jazz III and Red Jazz III Max grip. The max grip version are awesome if you tend to drop picks and they also help the transition from big pick to small jazz pick since they have loads of grip. Jazz IIIs have ruined all other picks for me. I have a huge collection of different pics and I'm only comfortable with the Jazz IIIs now. I just ordered some new custom printed 1.0mm Jazz shape picks from intunegp.com and I'm hoping I can get comfortable playing them.

I was pick testing the other day to see if I can use anything else and took this picture of a handful of the different picks I have...

Purple .96 Gator Grips. It is important that I can find whatever pick I use easily...and they are basically cheap. I lose picks easily, they go through the wash, etc...I have a problem with lots of picks' texture, and nylon feels weird to me, while normal Fender plastic is too clicky. Occasionally, I will try other ones, but always come back to the gator grips.

Re: what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

long ago, I just used kinda whatever, then I discovered the Dunlop Tortex .060s and became all about those. Then I read something in a guitar rag about all the guys that use Jazz IIIs and so I tried those. Took some getting used to cuz they were stiffer, but I could pick more precisely and I need all the help I can get. Then I started using the Eric Johnson ones. THEN.. I tried the Jazz III carbon fiber max grips which I LOVE cuz of the grip surface. So, now use the Jazz III carbon fiber max grips. Awesome!

I use V-Picks products on all my guitars. Here is the current assortment. The one on the left is a Large Pointed Ultrathin - for the acoustic; the others get used for my electrics: the Medium Rounded on the right is for my Tele with flatwounds, the Jalapeno is for my Soloist, and the 72 Thinline and Hamer T-62 get Screamers (the one at middle bottom). In general, they have a very articulate, nice and bright attack; the Med. Rounded has a softer attack to go with the flatwound strings. Here they are:

Dunlop John Petrucci Jazz III - these little bastards are heavenly! Beveled edge with good grip. My picking hand has increased in precision since the switch... no joke!

I have been using some custom picks from InTuneGP lately. They're Jumbo JazzIII picks in a Tortex-like material, .88mm. And of course I put my band logo and signature on them. Cause I'm that guy.

I bought a gross of picks from them 4 or 5 years ago and the supply is still going strong. They're my favorite picks as well, which is nice. When these run out, I'll be ordering some new ones (although a new design, as that band is now defunct despite my better efforts to revive it).

GripX .88s I believe, though they feel slightly thicker than green Tortexes to me, or perhaps they're just a bit firmer. Either way, I prefer these.

Dunlop Jazz III XL's for me. They're just the right size for my tastes. I've tried to like the Regular Jazz III's but they are just too small for my fingers and can't get past it. I like the glossy finish the regular jazz III's have in comparison to the XL's satin finish but it's not a deal breaker because the XL's have raised lettering which grips nicely.

I do want to try the Tortex T3's dunlop-tortex-tiii-1.0mm_m.jpg (Tortex size but with the Jazz III tip)...but I tend to bevel out the edges relatively fast on the Tortex picks

Re: what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

thanks yall this helps a lot! I have been using my other no-brand-name old picks and noticed awesome dynamics versus my sharp tortex 1.0 that I am just not liking any more, I am gonna have to get a bunch and try em out. I am a little worried about getting used to those small picks though and not wanting any others. prolly need to try some for bass guitar as well, the larger triangle traditional bass size.

Re: what guitar PICK do you use? Dunlop? Tortex? Ultex? JazzIII? or ???

Tonight I just ordered 20 bucks worth of Graphtech tusq picks.....88mm's and 1mm's in the "warm" and the "deep". I like the "bright", but its a bit small; I like larger picks. I got them based on a sample of the .88mm "bright" I recieved , that I like. Some may not like the tusq picks, as they are very brittle sounding when dropped on a hard surface, whatever that means.
Usually I use Dunlop Nylon 1MM , and the big triangle Tortex 1MM.

Dunlop .88's, the grey ones with beveled edges and raised lettering (for a good grip).
