What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

A lot of the guys that were playing classic guitars back in their heyday are now using nothing but handmade boutiques, these days.

That's the kind of attitude I have right now. I love the simplicity of the LP Special DC. That guitar has a magic that I can forsee staying in my staple till I get much older. The same thing with the Grosh. It has the classic looks, great feel, incredible vintage strat tones and some humbucker versatility for distortion. I've been spoiled and I love boutique or highend stuff too much now. I also see myself with atleast one good acoustic when I get older. I love my Ovation to death and it sounds amazing plugged in. It's what I think I will be writing all of my material on from now on.

The only thing I might add in the future is a good hollowbody guitar - something like a Guild Starfire IV.

As far as amps, I like getting good tone at lower volumes. The Fargen does take a little volume to get "in the zone", but at 15-30w, I won't have tinitus or the cops over quite so soon ;) I may end up buying a Suhr amp down the road and if John Suhr ever releases an amp that delivers Marshall and bf Fender in a size that will cut for medium gigs and still sound great in the bedroom, I'll be there  As others have mentioned, who knows about the technology in the future? Getting cranked tone is getting more and more reasonable everyday and some amp companies are really leading the pack when it comes to getting cranked tone at whisper volumes (London Power being one)

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

Probably a tom anderson through a small tube combo. Just straight into the amp and let my fingers do the work.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

I think the best amps of the future will be one's with a modeling preamp, being fed into a complex tube arrangement, which results in a massive amount of versatility, and an answer to pure tube path feel. In about 5-10 years, they'll have amps that are mindblowing.

I see myself probably spending my later years with Strats and acoustics mostly, but also Pauls and Teles. But, who knows.......maybe Fender, Gibson, or PRS, or other company will come out with a new classic that I'll latch onto.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

In my younger days, a guitar needed to have a Floyd. a raked headstock, and humbuckers. Now, I'll be playing my G&L Legacy til I die!

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

I must say that I will probably play the same gear I've been using since '92. (Heck, I'm getting old!!) :laugh2:

If I could choose only one, it would have to be a Gibson Les Paul of some sort.

As of amps, my Soldano has been doing wonders for my playing, so that would have to stay. Maybe a Matchless/Bad Cat would be nice...?

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

Just what I have now: doctored-up Tele, homemade Marshall 18-Watter-ish combo, assortment of old pedals left over from the 80's. I'd like to add a Les Paul of some sort, and then I'm good.

Having four kids (and the related expenses) has pretty much cured me of GAS.

As an aside, I've long held the opinion that players tend to gravitiate from Gibsons to Fenders as they get older. Playing-induced deafness makes it so they can't hear Gibsons anymore, so they need the Fenders' extra treble just to break even. :)

I've already downsized all my gear for my senior years! :laugh2:

20 watt amps like the '58 tweed Deluxe or '66 Deluxe Reverb or '51 Super suit me just fine.

I'll always have my '63 Strat and '54 Tele...I'll probably sell my humbucker guitars someday as I rarely play them.

I hope to one day get an early 30's National Tri Cone resonator guitar...I already have a '29 or '30 National Style 0. I play more acoustic guitar than anything else already...I'll probably save what's left of my hearing and concentrate even more on my acoustics and resonator guitars as I get even older.

It seems to me that many electric guitar players in their 50s and 60s start using a lot of chorus. I have no idea why. I imagine I'll stick with basic Fender/Gretsch/Gibsonesque (but not the real thing unless the company has some radical changes) stuff. "Quality never goes out of style." I guess I'll have to start cranking up the chorus too.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

I want to be one of those 60/70 year old guys the neighbors absolutely hate. So, I'll have a "vintage" Diezel Herbert head, a vintage 1998 model Marshall stack with Vintage 30s and drive everyone nuts by playing Dokken, Ratt and VH tunes all day long.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

I can already see my tastes changing, over time i've been growing tired of the pointy headstock / Floyd thing and getting a LITTLE more tame, I will begin building a Warmoth guitar very soon. I still really like the soloist body but it will have a regular strat headstock and fixed bridge of some sort.

As for amps, I can only imagine what technology will give us in the next 20 years, just look at the difference in digital equipment (amps, recording software etc. etc. ) that has come about in the last 10 years !! There's absolutely no telling what we'll have at our disposal !

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

I don't think I'll make it to 60. I think sometime around 40 I'll still have my Jackson, but It'll be plugged into a hot-rodded Marshall stack and I'll finally hit that perfect, blistering solo that sends the amp into a sonic meltdown and I'll die in the inferno.

But if that doesn't happen, I just hope I'm not playing elevator music or showtunes. I'll always have the Jackson, but I'll probably forget how to change the strings and it'll sound like crap. Maybe then I'll have enough money to buy a new guitar every time I need to change strings. That would be the life.......

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

I went about 20 years with just acoustics. I could probably switch back primarily at some point. Who knows. My grandkids will have probably already conned me out of my Les Pauls.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

Probably a lot of what I got. Most of my amps are ole enough for my grampa to have played, I have Strat's and Tele's so I got's all the old man gear.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

i'll always have my Takamine "Ruby"...i wouldn't sell or get rid of her for the world...may sound silly to some...but i "get lost" playing on that guitar sometimes...simply lost.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

Probably what I have now (Gibson, Fender, & Hamer). Same amp(50w all tube combo w/2X12's). I will probaly add a lower wattage tube amp, an acoustic or dobro, and play my mandolin more (sounds like something grand kids would like :) )

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

i made a promise to myself that i would never sell any of my gear. that statement has transformed to "i will never sell any of my guitars." That being said, I will never get rid of my Ibanez because its the first guitar i ever purchased. I will never get rid of my ESP LTD because it was my college graduation/23rd birthday present from my parents, the same people who dispised the fact that i played music (basically a Major Milestone). I will never get rid of my Applause/Ovation because it's my only acoustic and it just plays really nice.

i would only make additions to my list. A PRS because i've always wanted one (CE22, Hardtail bridge, Chrome/nickel hardware, Platinum Metallic), A nice, expensive acoustic (IE Taylor), and a nice low wattage tube combo.

but i'll always have that ibanez. it plays like crappicus now but it's taken a beating and still alive.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

Well... since based on most of the ages I see here I'm already old... I will always keep my '76 Martin D35, and love my Fat Strat, so that one I will keep as well. The mid-70's Jazz Bass is also a keeper... just can't beat the sound of that one. Some day I will add a Standard Strat, and hopefully a PRS (just because). Amp-wise... need to do away with the Carvin solid state and replace it with a Hot Rod Deluxe... then I'll be a happy man.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

Probably a small tube amp and a custom made guitar by then, i dont want a large collection, just a high quality one.

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

The "Stratdeluxer" modded wheel chair amp and ceiling suspended cable lowered stratocaster blaster.....LOL

Re: What Guitars and Amps will you use in your Senior years?

if the good lord blesses me with grandchildren and life long enough to see em play guitar, i'd be thrilled if i can pass on my axes ... but i'll be keeping the PRS until i cant play any more ... as for amps, everything i have now is interim ... i'll hope to have a small super high quality amp or two (fuchs, dr z, two rock, rivera, boogie, etc ...)
