What Happened to the Strats?!

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

Waitaminute, during the nineties both Billy Joe and Rivers used Stratocasters with Humbuckers. Double that, Tom Delongue used an Invader! Is that really "strat tone" in the traditional sense, i.e. three single coils? I don't think so! When you think about it if you use a Stratocaster with a humbucker, yet Gibson is pretty much the humbucker guitar with "humbucker tone", you may as well use a Gibson.

+100000000000000000000000000000000 to the Lewis Black comment. I can spoil it for you now, but he gives the delivery that makes it hillarious...

Yea, MTV sucks blue whale. Blues guys will still favor the strats, rock guys (or whatever the **** you call those losers on MTV and even VH1 now) will have the SGs slung around their necks typically. But pretty much what everyone else said, there are still tons of guys with rocking out with strats.

Some people dig humbuckers that aren't in a Gibson. That's the reason for the HH strats, PRSs, Hamers etc. Humbuckers don't = Gibson, single coils don't = Fenders.

But I get what you're saying...it's really hard to call what they were using strats in the way that we know and love strats.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I agree with you. Both Iron Maiden and Judas Priest used hums in Strats and the tones were just ungodly awesome, but I don't really think of that as "Strat tone" in the traditional Hendrix, Buddy Guy, or Eric Johnson sense.

When I think of Gibson I think of think, brutal humbuker tone from body shapes and woods that are equally brutal. I think originally they were each made to do different things and they did each thing well, until people started changing out the parts and doing all kinds of unstrat or un-gibson like things. Something that surprises me is when I see a single coil in the neck of an LP!

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

Funny how some days you love humbuckers and some days you can't stand them. Personally I hate all of those bands you mentioned but I gotta admit, early blink was kinda cool, and early greenday was... acceptable.

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

The truth is, only five punk rockers ever bought a Strat. The only reason why you used to see them all the time, was that these same five guitars kept getting stolen, and re-stolen, over and over until it gave the impression they were popular.

These days, the same thing is happening to the only four black Les Paul Customs that were ever built.

:fing25: j/k

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

I think its pretty silly to equate the "quality" of a band's music with the specific brand of gear they're using at a time. If you feel like these artists have "sold out" they probably would have sold out just as well with a strat. A gibby isn't gonna be the little muse that crawls into their ears and tells em to suck.

People will play whatever instruments they like...Period.

Krank pretty much beet me to it.

Most guitar players mature and discover new axes that they dig. I don't see a problem with that at all. Heck I'm just as guilty as the next forum bro. :27:

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

I think angels and airwaves is way better than blink and thats with a gibson...

I dont really like any of them but still angels and airwaves over blink ANYDAY

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

The reason you see so many crappy bands with Les Pauls is the fact that they are a rock cliché, period.
It's not the guitars that suck, but the bands using them. Because today, if you are in a "rock band" and want to be popular, you gotta have the Les Paul! (at least that's what they probably think). It's just trendy.
But a thing that IS fact of course is that Single Coils usually don't take high gain *that* good. That said, which of the bands on MTV really has high gain?
Hmm... I think it really just boils down to being trendy. What can I say, Strats are cool.

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

I could probably name 50 bands off the top of my head that play a Strat or some kind of Fender. I don't see what you mean. There are so many more outlets for music today, why watch MTV?

Especially the new crop of indie bands...they pretty much all play Fender guitars through Fender amps...

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

I hate indie so much.

Finally someone who thinks alike!

But what annoys me most is when they use humbucker guitars and get that... indie... "clean"... sound... it's so annoying and makes me vomit onto myself instantly.

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

Could have something to do w/the 60 cycle hum...but most likely the thicker tone that is produced by humbuckers, endorsements and trends are probably the real reason.

Btw, what you see them playing on stage or on a video is NOT always what is being played in the studio, even on the same song.

Poor Dangly...getting delusional again :smack: :laugh2:

I know the sound. Urgh. Those chords that only ring out for a split second, it makes me cringe.

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

A few smaller texas bands that I have followed do play strats. Of the one that has gotten popular (blue october), the lead man switched from using fenders on everything to gibson guitars and vox after being signed.

It seems to have ruined their sound and sounds much duller, especially when playing older songs. The main guitarist still uses his prs though outside of their music videos.

I think a lot of lables have deals with gibsons that the band gets free equipment as a way to advertise, but forces bands often to change their sound and it sucks!

Re: What Happened to the Strats?!

Two of my favorite artists ever :)

And Eric Clapton is just the headliner for the entire band basicly. He doesn't play everything, he does vocals and guitar. There's other people playing keys, drums, bass, other guitars, saxophone, and other things. Same with Robert Cray.

And the reason bands on MTV sound terrible isn't because of their instruments or selling out to Gibson - its because they're just bad :6:

(No offense to anyone who likes these bands, its just my opinion)

Some of the best music has been played on Gibsons, just look at Cream or Led Zeppelin. Likewise, some great music has been played on Fenders, like Clapton or Cray, Robin Trower, Hendrix...the list goes on for either of them.

Playing a different instrument has nothing to do with a band sounding bad ;)

I noticed you mentioned Zeppelin....well its funny cause Page did play alot of Gibsons, but at the same time, recorded with a Tele often too. But he is known for his Gibsons.
