What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Thanks for the responses guys. Looks like I have a lot to check out.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Planet waves cables are great for the 'take them back when they don't work and get free cables' aspect.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Make my own from mogami bulk cable, neutrik jacks and covered in techflex web... very nice sounding cables, rugged and good looking.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

I really love Fender Tweed cables; however, they didn't last long when I left them at a Church where I was playing...somehow equipment that doesn't break in the 2 years I've had it manages to break in 2 weeks that someone "borrows" it...I.E. didn't ask if they could use it.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Can't beat Mogami. About 5 years ago I did a lot of testing/comparing of many different cables. Nothing sounded better than Mogami (even at 30'). I even tested 10 - 15' long cords against a 30'; Mogami and the Mogami sounded better. There were several others that sounded as good as or nearly as good as the Mogami and were a lot cheaper, but they weren't as flexible (the Fender Gold series for example...GREAT sounding cord for a reasonable price, but pretty stiff).

Is it just me, or are those really expensive cables?

About the same compared to other premade high quality cables. However, you can buy Mogami in bulk, and add you own ends for much, much less.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Ah I see...I'm use to paying about $20 for a 10' to 20' Fender Custom Tweed cable and saw $20 for a 12" Mogami cable...I'll stick with my Fender Tweed. lol

Spectraflex have never let me down.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

I've been using Spectraflex and Dimarzio cables. The Dimarzios are a good quality, fairly sturdy cable with fair clarity and low noise. Spectraflex are exceptionally durable compared to many of the Guitar Center offerings, and a little more durable than the Dimarzios. I want to say that the Spectraflex cables are slightly less bright than the Dimarzios, but slightly clearer and more even response. Dimarzios seem to have a more sensitive treble response whereas the Spectraflex cables are more even across the spectrum. I Spectraflex for both instrument and speaker cables, and Dimarzio for instrument and patch cables.

I've used Planet Waves which are priced very fair and offer a similar sound quality to the Dimarzios, but I find that the Spectraflex speaker cables are better overall and with similar prices. I recently tried the Fender premium cables, but they don't impress me with quality vs. cost. Fender isn't going to sway me from Spectraflex. Some great but more expensive cables are made by Lava which I have a few of their patch cables still. The absolute best cables you can buy are Evidence, but ridiculously expensive for anyone who isn't professional musician. I used to have a little setup with an Evidence 10' instrument cable and 6' speaker cable. There was a subtle but obvious difference between it and any other cables I had laying around. I ended up selling them for some Dimarzio cables and haven't regretted it, but if I were to go out to buy the best, I would buy Evidence.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

Evidence audio. I heard a noticeable difference from my monsters. I tested all my cables out with a true bypass looper. I just put one cable in the loop, no other pedals. I was stunned.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

To be fair, my bandmate plugged into my amp at our last gig. He had three pedals and a mix n match of cables. He had to crank my amp to get the same volume and adjust all the tone knobs. And after all of that.... He sounded perfectly fine.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

I like Dimarzio Cables. There was a shoot out in Guitar Magazine some years ago where the reviewers had not put Dimarzio at #1 but all the reviewers thought it was solid and had a pleasing mojo, so I gave them a try. I find Dimarzio to be quality cable at a more reasonable price than Mogami or MonsterCable.

I figured with few exception all cable was the same until I got some real crappy ones; Guitar Center had mystery brand stuff that sounded awful, Fender also has some horrible models.
I've gotten buy fine(especially live) with ProCo, Horizon, & Monster 100 series.
I like George L's for the Pedalboard, they work most of the time, and sound great.

I've had very good luck with My Star Sound cables. I get 'em at my local shop, rebranded under their name. Very good quality, simple black cables made in the U.S.A.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

I use Planet waves "American Stage" and Live Wires... Not had the PL's that long, but I really like them. I've had all the live wires for years.. tugged, stepped on, thrown around..etc.. and yet to lose one. Still have the first one I bought like 10yrs ago... guess they have paid for themselves lol

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

So far the Planet Waves cables have been really solid. I also like anything with a braided jacket, as long as it's reliable. My favorite cable of all is the one I made from 10 feet of MIT audio interconnect. It's heavy and microphonic, but it's really punchy sounding. (For those of you who go by the lumped-parameter approximation: Yeah, I know. Too bad.)

IMO, the best cables are made this way. Techflex braiding keeps cables from getting tangled, looks great, makes them more durable.

Re: What instrument cable brand do you prefer?

I'm still using George L.

I like the way my guitar sounds with George L's.

One thing I don't like is the way the plugs loosen up after a couple of years

But one thing I do like is that I can tighten them right up again and they continue to work like new.

Another is that with a little maintenance, they seem to last forever.

I've never thrown one away.
