What is a 1977 Gibson . . .

Re: What is a 1977 Gibson . . .

Huh? I see only a few inches of neck in just one those three pictures, and it is impossible to tell what it is from the picture because it is so far away and there is so much glare. But a '77 should have three pieces of maple. What makes you say it looks like a mahogany neck? Is there a picture I missed?

With 3-piece maple necks you can usually see the 3-pieces-ness right at the heel, it is very obvious, and most of the time the color is also much lighter on the neck than the body.

OK, so the seller wants $2750.00 USD.

Too much ? Good price ? Silly price ?

What do you guys think ?

Maybe a larger photo without glare would show it better. Or maybe the seller has the year wrong and it does have a mahogany neck?

If they really have gone up since the one I talked about, $1,750 sounds decent. I actually like multi-piece maple necks. They have always worked great and sounded great on my Guilds, plus they are more hardy in case your guitar falls over. What I don't like is pancake bodies and three-piece tops...but those are mainly cosmetic gripes.

Well he won't sell a guitar like that with bad photos and bad comms :)

Re: What is a 1977 Gibson . . .

I think not. IMHO, for that price, you will generally get a better instrument with a CS, or even a standard production, instrument from the '90's or early aughts. But the '77 will likely never go down in value, if that is important to you. Don't get me wrong; I have an '83 Norlin LP Custom that I love...but I also hate it for many reasons, and it took a lot of trial and error to get it sounding how I like. I also would never pay more than what I paid for it; it was around $1,100, I think. (Maybe less. I don't remember right now, as there was some sort of trade involved too.) Personally, I think that mid-'70's LPs selling for over two grand is ludicrous. They can be fine instruments, but not $2K+ instruments.

IMO $2750 is too much. Personally I wouldn't go over $2500 with $2200-$2300 sounding more realistic.
