It's an acoustic guitar that is designed to be amplified more than regular acoustics via a speaker like cone on which the bridge sits. They were invented a bit before electric started to come in the picture.
There are a few different styles (spider cone, single cone national style, and tricone) each with different acoustic characteristics.
I personally like old national 14 fret single cone resonators. The new national resophonic guitars are nice but sound different, a bit too clean and refined IMO.
