What is brand of Jim Croce.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, the video in your hyperlink will not play on my smartphone. Croce used various brands of guitar in his career.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

That guitar in the first picture is an Ovation. No idea what model.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

Jim Croce primarily played Ovation guitars. It was; at the time one of the best "performing" guitars. They were designed by a Company that had significant backround in Aircraft engineering. They have a bowl back made of fiberglass, but at the time the electronics were very good for playing live. Personally I could never get used to playing one. That Bowl back made it almost impossible to play sitting down & I think they sounded like crap but that's just me.

I've said it before and I'll say it now

Ovation guitars are for youth pastors and old beginners. They look dorky and sound like plastic.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

He may have been an Ovation fan(though honestly, I don't recall seeing him on TV play anything but Martins), but when he played live his other guitar player/players used Martins.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

Jim Croce was the most universal of all musical artists and sported one of (if not the) most iconic moustaches in music history.

Thank you.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

My solo acoustic gig features quite a bit of Jim. You can't miss with his stuff and it feels good helping to keep the songs alive.

My old Jim Croce albumn cover shows Martin. I don't know for a fact that he played it on the album but to my ears the recording definitely sounds like a Martin Axe.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

I'm sure in the studio he used a REAL acoustic, but in almost every case I have seen him perform live he always had an ovation

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

The guitar that's in the "video" looks like a Standard Balladeer, but that's just a guess. Personally, I like Ovation guitars a lot. They sound to me like a guitar should sound. They have a fairly flat response (that is, the mid and deep bowl models), plus they take a beating that would turn any normal guitar into toothpicks with the way I play.

The musical leader of "Liturgical Tendencies" at my high school played an Ovation. Double Lolz. Basically a P&W dude.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

Ovations are a different animal. I sold Ovations and their high end Adamas models back in the late 70's, early 80's.I agree that they are quite uncomfortable to play sitting down! I play and love your traditional wood, dreadnaught, O, OO, OOO, Grand Concert, etc acoustics. I've played many Ovations that had a wonderful tone.....and I've played some that sounded like crap....pretty much like wood guitars! The Adamas were some pretty amazing guitars in ther day. The first carbon fiber guitars years before Rainsong, et al. I even bought a Korean made Ovation Celebrity back in 1993. I needed an acoustic, had a budget in mind and proceeded to play every acoustic in that price range at several stores. The one that spoke to me above all others was that stinking Celebrity! The one with the sound holes like the Adamas models. Played the hell out of it for a few years and wound up trading it for a few lap steels and a pedal steel. While I don't really care for the look of Ovation guitars and have no thoughts of ever owning one again, if a guitar speaks to me tone wise/playability wise and is what I consider a bargain, I don't care if it's made out of newspaper.....I'll find a way to get it!

Back in the day, they were 'the guitar' if you were going to plug in. Glen Campbell, Jim Croce, Nancy Wilson of Heart, Steve Howe....the list goes on....lot's of great players used them to great effect.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

Ovations have a number of pros and cons.

Pros:
They all sound similar. For better or worse they are consistent.
They have decent electronics built in. Too many people have tried to put electronics in a good sounding acoustic and failed.
They are tolerant of climate change. You can pick one up at any time and you don't need to set it up again because it rained yesterday.

Cons:
Acoustically they aren't great, but they were meant to be played plugged in and not acoustically.
They lack individuality of a true acoustic guitar.
Too many people think an acoustic is supposed to sound like an ovation.
Too many power ballads were played on them so they all smell like aquanet.

Re: What is brand of Jim Croce.

Jim and the good folks at Ovation got into it more than once...Jim was an Ovation endorser but he never recorded with them, at least not that I know of...on album he used mostly various old Martins.
