What is the best Pedal for High Gain Marshall Tone?

The best "Marshall in a box" pedals I ever heard are:

Ibanez Tube King
Barber Direct Drive SS
Sans Amp GT2

All have that real, not fuzzy, defined Marshall character.

For my money, the Barber Direct Drive SS is amazing, flexible as hell, true bypass, and is only $130 brand new. The crunch, definition, and balls it has is astounding. No lie.

Mac, have you ever compared the DDSS to the regular DD? Just curious.

What about some G2D pedals?

My JackHammer is stock and untouched by my tweaky hands! :32: I've never modded one of these pedals? I like the JH just as it is...Maybe this pedal was actually voiced by musicians because they got it right..???

Well i thought it was great when I had it but there seemed to be a woofy loose low-end problem in DS mode and the Mids were always kind of a bitch to work with. a LITTLE nasalness in there but way less than a stock MT2.

If you got your hands on another one what do you think you could do with it?

Ahhhhhh, see I Only use the OD side because it's tight, crunchy, and Marshall sounding...I guess it's the OD side that sold me on it....I've never used the DS side on mine...It was worth the price just for that mode and the overall tone and balls the pedal offers...

Here's a pedal that's supposed to be really incredible for Marshall tones : V-Stack Classic, just look up reviews on it ;)

No, never a direct comparasin with the basic Direct Drive. But the Direct Drive SS has three internal pots to adjust, which are "boosters" for bass, presence, and extra distortion.

According to the DDSS manual, if you turn all of them off, that is the sound of the standard Direct Drive.

Basically, the SS allows you too boost the bass, presence and gain for a more "scooped" sound.

I like the mids more prominent so I turn everything down inside except the "extra gain" which I have just a hair open. Makes it just a little hotter.

Freat f*cking pedal. And true bypass unlike any of the other pedals metioned.

Major ditto on the Barber DDSS, it rules! The Tonebone Hot British would be even better if you want really high gain with the Marshall sound.

Cheers,

CJ

True, but the Tonebone HB is $200. The Barber DDSS is $129 brand new, and you can find em on eBay for less.

:D

Thanks Mac! I have the regular DD and love it but maybe will check out the other one too.

Tonebone Hot British, One of the best High gain Marshall pedals I have ever played and own. For more of a Soldano or Mesa tone the Tonebone Classic is great Thats the one I use all the time into a 59 Bassman RI, Both pedals are very convincing!

Re: What is the best Pedal for High Gain Marshall Tone?

Just on a sidenote...the CM Plexitone can play at low volumes as well and sound pretty full and has enough crunch for most classic rock...
Just thought that I should chime in as well;)
