what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

It depends which guitar it is in. A mini switch in a Les Paul? I'd rather use a push/pull.

In fact, I'd rather use a push/pull anyway (sorry, I did have a guitar I fitted a mini switch to for coil splitting, but I cant remember what type it was!)

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

if you have a shallow control cavity
a PP may not fit, and a toggle would be necessary

most folks don't want extra holes in the face of their guitars
and thus use the PP

folks with common pick guards ( like strats ) don't mind so much
ie toggles
also if using a master tone/volume pair on a three hole strat guard
the full sized toggle fills the hole

with that said

any on-off switch will do

on my buddies HSS strat
he opted for a 3 position on-off-on switch

to give him
up = hum always on
Middle = standard strat switching
Down = hum split always on

SP/DT? That sound right?

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

I prefer push/pulls for most situations.

OR there's always this:

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

its in a strat, with 2 Dimarzio Air Classics, and a 500k volume, 3 way switch. i just want to split the neck pickup. i already have extra holes in the guard. i just don't know whigh switch i need. i think i need dpdt. and probably just on/off.

i want to flip the switch and have one coil, then flip the switch back and have both coils.

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

single pole single throw

what size holes ya got
full sized 3/8 pot holes or mini switch holes
cuz the auto parts store should have the 3/8 variety for bout 3 bucks

you only need two lugs (like a light switch)
red/white pair to one and a ground on the other

you could of course get the minis from a guitar part place like stewmac
or GFS

thes have three terminals/lugs

center is common
either outside is active when switch is moved
up connects one outside lug to common
down opens that one and connects the other outside

Double pole Double throw have two independent rows of these

if you had another pickup to split with the same action
you could use the second row

if you wanted to use a on-off-on you could
connect the red white combo to the center(common) lug
a hot to one outside lug and a ground to the other

this would enable you to have
up = slug coil split
middle = no split / series
down = adjustable coil split

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

heres what id do in a strat, make it master volume, master tone, and have the 3rd pot be used as a spin-a-split

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

spin a split is my favorite way but the easiest is a on/off mini sw

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

thats what i want. on=humbucker, off=single coil. the holes in my guard are the full size that would hold volume and tone pots. i only have 1 volume and a switch. i dont mind putting more holes either. its a beater guitar anyway.

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

i have a 500k push-pull that i could use, anybody have a schematic handy?

Re: what is the easiest way to split a humbucker?

my strat had a master tone, master vol and a mini switch for splitting in the 3rd pot hole
