What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

I don't know about useless, but I could go the rest of my life without ever stepping on a chorus pedal.

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

For me it's a univibe.

I've had a Fulltone Deja vibe on my board for years and I've never found a use for it.

I've searched the net long and hard to find someone who uses it in a musical way and failed.

I'm giving up now and putting it up for sale to fund a Hartman Flanger.

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

If all you're gonna do is Metal, it's a useless pedal.
But I think the Pitch Shift mode on that pedal could actually be very useful for clean arpeggios and certain parts of songs, for other styles.
It adds a cool texture, unlike the usual ring modulator sounds which are very unmusical and just don't make any sense.

Diego, I almost edited my post to say that very thing.... :1:
But then again, if you want a pitch shift ..... then just buy a pitch shift pedal right?.... the RingMod makes 500 billion useless noises. :cool2:

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Talk Box. No real time action since the 70's with Frampton "Do you feel like I do"..now THATs useless!.

While I'm no fan at all of Bon Jovi, Sambora did use one on Living On A Prayer.
Mick Mars also used one on Kickstart My Heart.

However, that's the first use of it in rock I've heard since Frampton. These days everyone does that effect with an improperly adjusted autotune

Didn't Hendrix use one? And Robin Trower on Bridge Of Sighs?

Maybe you were expecting something different because of all the Hendrix Zealots?

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Only pedal I use is an OD, and that is only with an amp like a Twin that needs it if you want grind. For the rest of you, well, hey, what works is what works.

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Dunlop Way Huge Ring Worm Ring Modulator.
audio demo from 2:25 to 3:38.... pretty useless.

So my point is proved.. Hendrix used it on one load of noise disguised as a song and I have no intention of playing Bridge Of Sighs, so it's totally useless.

My ex wife bought it for me as I mentioned they seem to appear on everyone's pedalboard and I was curious... but I've never found a use for it musically.

Time to sell it. :banghead:

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

That settled it for me..... (I actually watched the whole video) ...... completely useless.
I mean really, IF, I were going to sit in the garage and make silly "noises" all day then yeah, that may be the cats meow.... but I've got some BrooTalZ SLAYING TO DO! .... so in the real world.... that pedal just plain SUCKS!

.... and now here's something we hope you really like......

BTW how can people claim that a distortion pedal is worthless.... I mean really..... 900 million guitar players use one.....: private:

doesn't fit your style. I LOVE making textures and noises so it does fit my style. differnt strokes.

It's not just for blues, and doesn't have to be the main attraction of a song.

It's a matter of opinion, but I think the Univibe does something musical to bar 7 of this load of noise disguised as a song.

Cheers......................................... wahwah

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Little Wing is amazing but the vibe was so subtle as to be almost non existent and a chorus pedal would almost do the same job I think.

It's going up for sale when I can get my board from my mate's studio this weekend.

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Cool pedal.. but useless.

That is FAR from useless. I can already hear that in my rig.

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

a pedal is not gonna make stuff sound like electronica or put people in a daze - I dont like phasers, chorus, tremolo stuff,

pretty much the fad type pedals. its about human connection with the instrument - if the sound cant really be manipulated any more than just stepping on a pedal I think a pedal is good for a few secs then turn it off!

delay and reverb and wah and dirt are the only pedals that are worthy in todays age methinks

Re: What is the least needed/most useless effect?

Pedals can lend a hand creating an atmosphere. Imagine Pink Floyd's "Breathe" without the guitar effect. That helps the bass, slide guitar, and drums create the mood of the song. Take that away and the vibe is different.

Granted it might not come across the same way in an individual guitar-effect-amp setting without the other instruments contributing, but you should always think in context of the full band. It's not all about the guitar player.

And yes, short bursts of a pedal are sometimes the best route. Consider EVH on Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love, how he only brings in the phaser in the intro riff for the C and D, and then sparingly during the verses, but the whole solo has it, then it cuts off again.
