What is the Mount Rushmore of stomps?

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of stomps?

From the Boss site:

“The BOSS TU-2 Chromatic Tuner incorporates BOSS' world renowned TU-Series tuner technology into an ultra-convenient stompbox design. For the first time ever, guitarists and bassists can now tune their instruments with unrivaled accuracy and an unmatched tuning range--with just a single stomp.”

:chairfall

I think I’ve been misled. I wish I could find a year of introduction for the Arion.

To be fair the accuracy was unrivaled. The Arion I owned wasn't great. It added noise on mute that changed pitch depending on the LED that was lit. Lol

Fender also had a Pedal Tuner in 97/98 -I didnt like it (too few LEDS) and gave it to Chris Wollard from the band Hot Water Music. I ran a Korg before the TU-2 -because Korgs and Sabine were before the TU-2 the most accurate and tolerant stage tuners.

I had 2 Arions (still have them but they are super cheap) and agree -nothing is as good as the TU-2 -even the TC Electronics stuff now isn't really better than a TU-2

I am surprised no vibe pedals have been mentioned yet. The Univibe was next on my list.

I thought about it, but it’s such a specific sound. The chorus and phase shifter are more ubiquitous in guitar music. I also thought about the Flanger (4 knob, it’s pretty versatile) but again, I think the other two modulations are broader in appeal and application.

On the vibe, I always find myself daydreaming about a new Pedalboard.... and it always includes Wah, Fuzz and Vibe... even though my core effects are a Marshall flavored distortion, a Tube Screamer style overdrive and a delay.

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of stomps?

As a total front-end jamming alone my four are;

all boss
guitar > ph2 > cs3 > mt2 > rc3

I don't have a phaser yet (next on my list). How does running a phaser into the MT-2 sound? And is your MT-2 stock or mod'ed?

Thanks.

I'm a phaser-1st guy all the way. Everything from true clean to the zone sounds great like that IMO, although with heavy gain I only use phasing for leads.

My mt2 is plain stock. I would like a waza for the standard mode mostly, but until they're going for about half-price I'm out lol.
I know some of the mods are somewhat easy and cheap, but I'm just not into electronics work beyond simple pickup installs.

I've never gotten the thing with phasers. I like phasers with pedal control to replace wah (which i never use), but that's only thing I really use them.

The way they sound I think they need that controllability to sound good. But they can, and sound much better than wah.

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of stomps?

I'd want to run them through one of my Jubilees, but my four would be:

Wilson Wah
Wampler Tumnus
Boss CE-2
Boss DD-3 MIJ (long chip)

It's pretty similar to the board I ran when I didn't use the channel switch, instead rolling down volume for clean tones.

The ph-3 accepts an expression pedal and can tap tempo itself or with remote.
I'd like to try a remote expression with a few pedals actually,,,, it's on my shortlist.

I love setting phasers for a slower almost gentle auto-wah sound. (rate 9-10:00 with big depth)

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of stomps?

I can't do just four. To me, these I've listed are the most influential and ubiquitous pedals, and I'm talking original versions.

For a TUNER, the Boss TU-2.

For COMPRESSION, the MXR Dyna Comp.

For DISTORTION, the E-H Big Muff Pi, and the Ibanez Tubescreamer.

For PHASOR, the MXR Phase 90, E-H Small Stone, or Boss PH-1r.

For CHORUS, the Boss CE-2.

For WAH, the VOX or CRYBABY or MORLEY Power Wah.

For DELAY, the BOSS DD-3, DM-2, Ibanez Analog Delay, or the E-H Deluxe Memory Man.

For VIBE, the Uni-Vibe.

For EQ, the MXR blue 10-Band, or the BOSS GE-7.

I did not include a reverb or tremolo pedal, as these are frequently found in amps.

You could certainly cover a lot of gigs and genres with the gear above, in any combination.

The amp you use makes a huge difference in pedal selection. My Boogie amps have the distortion, reverb and GEQ covered. YMMV.

But....

If I had to choose only four pedals, I'd use a Snark headstock tuner. The pedals would be a WAH, PHASOR, CHORUS, and DELAY. On my board, I have an original Thomas Organ Crybaby, Boss PH-1r Phasor and CE-3 Chorus, and an MXR Carbon Copy delay.

If I could add a fifth pedal, it would be a clean boost preamp. My DOD FX-10 Preamp is my pedalboard's secret weapon. Number six would be a compressor; I'm using a Boss on my board. I also like using more than one delay pedal.

I find it interesting that so many of the top touring pro guitarists typically use commonly available production effects, and boutique pedals are relatively rare.

I should give you mine. Every time I use Phase in a song it just reminds me of how much better flanger would sound there. Even when I set it slow for a lead it just doesn't track the way I would like it to. A flange is always right there for me.

Pretty great list -while I agree that those are most of the Mount Rushmore's of the category -I can name some pedals that doesn't have the lineage -but is the same pedal just improved over the Mt Rushmore version that defined the category..

Example
Compression -the Greer Lamplighter is a much better compressor than a MXR Dyna Comp even thought the MXR is great.
Distortion.Overdrive -the MXR badass series is just a much better and flexible Tube Screamer than an actual Tube screamer. The JHS Morning Glory is a magical Overdrive. And some of the Klon Klones are unreal these days -Archer, Tumnus, every Xotic etc....
Delay -there are lots of more powerful and better delays on the market now -but honestly -it's hard to beat a 90s Boss Delay. they way they create delay is fundamentally better than most of the digital ones of today
Chorus -Agree on the BOSS, but I don't use Chorus, because Im a grown ass man.
Tuner -TU2 still hasn't been topped
Phaser -MXR hasn't been topped.

Re: What is the Mount Rushmore of stomps?

I bought my Arion Stage Tuner around 1992 or so. Still have it.

To answer the original question:
1. Any good fuzz or distortion pedal
2. Any good delay
3. Any good chorus or flanged
4. Maybe an octave pedal or another delay?

I have never used more than two pedals at a time. Fir years it was the tuner an a graphic EQ.
