Re: what is the soldano hot mod?

I've heard alot of things about it...

Some people claim it works in alot of amps but I've always heard it was intended for a single channel JCM800.

Re: what is the soldano hot mod?

Never used one but I think it's supposed to be similar to adding another gain stage without actually cutting up your amp. Mephis is right from what I remember about it being for older, single channel marshalls.

I've done some research about the hot mod. What it basically does is replace a 12AX7 tube (a dual triode tube) with a 6K11 or other compactron tube (a triple triode tube). So you get one additional gain stage thrown in your juicy old marshall circuit. The reason that it's not necessarily a good idea for all amps is that you have to put this thing where it can benefit the gain of the amp. If you stick it in a position where the extra triode is powering the tone stack or in the phase inverter spot, it does you no good at all. It works best with older master volume marshalls. My Edana is a non-master volume amp, but when I get an attenuator it will be fine. I gotta crank the Edana to get to the dirt anyway, so loud and proud is fine with me.

Not to high jack will it work will an 800 already modded? Will this new tube go bad? It would be expensive to replace

Re: what is the soldano hot mod?

The Kasha Quikmod was what that was based on. Kasha owns the patent on it too, which is why the HodMod isn't made anymore. The Quikmod is being made again... http://www.kashaamplifiers.com

It will work with a modded JCM800. I used the Quikmod on my Bray modded Marshall Super Lead. The Quikmod takes a cable with the tube pins on it which feeds to a small box that has 2 tubes in it. Also has a Gain and post gain control to adjust the tone and gain. THose tubes on the Quikmod should last quite a while asn most preamp tubes should should last longer then power tubes. Just 12AX7s.

You can get the hot mod (if you so desire) from ebay. There's one on there now for $125 at the moment. They tend to sell for $150 or so up to $200. The guy who's auctioning them on ebay is making a mint off them as he bought them for a very low price, but he's not a theif and will correct any mistakes made on the auction. I just did the buy it now feature on the hotmod he offered as I can always re-sell it if I don't like it. It will add a bit of gain and sustain to a JCM 800 and you won't have to lug an extra box and cables around with you.
