What is this hole doing there?

Re: What is this hole doing there?

Its where the machines grip the body to cut it i think... But everyone on here is gonna tell you its the magic sound hole...

Re: What is this hole doing there?

That's where they sprinkle the magic fairy dust in the Custom Shop models.

True story...when Fender took apart SRV's Lenny for the relic re-issue, they found several small holes under the pickguard where Rene Martinez had cored out little sections trying to balance the weight of the instrument from the left handed trem. The small hole also created a better moment of inertia to balance the force of the heavier strings that Stevie used. All of the holes had been filled back in except the one that is in the same location you are seeing now.

Okay, maybe it isn't true. But it would be a cool story.

Re: What is this hole doing there?

any one else find it funny that Fender had been making consistent bodies for years, switch to CNC and now they have to put guide holes?

Just found it kinda funny.

I thought it was Hilarious the first time I saw one like 10 years ago or so.... Every hack can make a strat with no extra routing or swiss cheesing, but Fender has to add a "mojo hole" for the machine :laugh2:

I remember the first time I saw one as well. I didn't know what to think. It was a sunburst MIM body with one large whole with two small holes on either side. It was a huge WTF moment for me, seeing I was 12 or so at the time. Just starting to get into modifying my guitars.

Re: What is this hole doing there?

Yep, my 2000 MiM has it as well (actually I think it's not one but rather 2-3, I don't remember quite well right now..)

Re: What is this hole doing there?

There's a couple of those on my Tele body

I had always kind of wondered this myself, glad to figure out what it is.

Re: What is this hole doing there?

Got one on my 08 AmStd Tele. Pretty lame, if you ask me. I can route out a better body without any magic divots in the wood.

Re: What is this hole doing there?

I'm going with CNC hole!

Big Joe77! Did you make that up yourself? If you did, start writing that screenplay/novel!

I find it especially amusing that they're on the American Fender bodies, and most Mexican Fender bodies, but not on the Highway 1 bodies...

Re: What is this hole doing there?

I gotta get me one of those holes!

Mine will need to be large enough to hold a shot glass so I can do a shot or two when I am working on the guts of my guitar...
