I have always wondered that myself. Seems like they started appearing about 10 years ago.
The CS Dick Dale Strat has a toggle switch right there, and I always thought the little hole had something to do with that.
Just a wacky coincidence I guess.

Computerized Numerically Controlled. It refers to any machine that is controlled by a computer program as opposed to a person.
When guitarists and guitar builders talk about CNC, they usually mean a CNC router.

You know -- you're right! I've got a '07 Hgwy1 Tele and it doesn't have that hole. What's up with that!

They didn't want to put the holes on the bodies from only one place since then the exact lineage of the highway 1s would be easy to figure out. This way you're left completely clueless as to where the highway 1s come from.

Yeah, but you´re nowhere as fast or cheap as the CNC router...

And that´s very likely, I highly doubt that the roadworn series are made in the CS, but probably on the same CNC routers that rout out the rest of the budget line and need these guide holes

yep, in think what happens is that they chuck a piece of wood in there, it drills those holes as a reference so it can go and route and drill out the rest of the body.
the machine would look at that hole as "center" and everything else references to that. in theory

Still no explanation as to why the Highway 1 bodies don't have that though. It seems their cheap guitars have it and their expensive guitars (the Am Std line) have it, but not the guitars in between...

Probably merely routed on a different machine that doesn´t need the guide hole in that particular location. Or routed with a different program that places that hole into a spot that can be easily removed post CNC with a chisel, like in the middle of the electronics rout

I really DON'T need anymore options for SHOTS, with my friends about. The frquency of Shots of Tequila when there's a gig/or not on is too much to handle already!
