I have no idea why you hate it this much, and I've never really heard a good reason why :laugh2:

Check out the DiMarzio VPAF thread over in the pickup forum...last couple pages...

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

I don't think I need to.. I like the JB sound in the kind of guitar I'm getting.

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

Yes, I did, but not because I was about to change my mind, but because I wanted to hear some reasons backing up the statements made

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

Well, I'm getting it in a guitar I haven't received yet, but I can tell you that it's has a mahogany body with quilted maple top, a bolt-on maple neck with an ebony fretboard.

Here's some pictures, but sorry for the ****ty quality of the pictures, had to save it in .gif instead, so it could be uploaded, I still have the original photo though, in much better quality.

Homemade jobbie ? What do you mean by that?

Its an independant builder or such? I've never seen that body shape before

Yes, it's not a very big company at all, actually I think it's only one man.

Hey ErikH I have a jcm900 sl-x 2100, it's made in 8/93. Do you know if those came stock with el-34's? I have currently have el-34's in it, that were already there when I bought it on ebay. I know that they switched to making 5881's stock in the late 1993, so I'm not sure if mine is one of the better sl-x amps.

Yours is right at the tail end of the stock EL34 equipped models. That's a good one.

The differences between the 5881 models and the EL34 models, from what I can see on the schematics, is the screen resistor, one metal film resistor in the fuse circuit (R30), a resistor in the phase inverter (R23), and of course the bias voltage.

The 5881 models have a 470 ohm screen resistor, bias to -50 volts approx (-42 volts for U.S.A.).
The EL34 models have a 10k screen resistor, bias to -48 volts approx.

The other resistors are small changes and have very little affect on the tone considering the tolerences used. However, 10k to 470 ohms on the screens is a big change, greater than 10%. That's quite a swing.

Changing one that has 5881's wouldn't be hard. Just those screen resistors being changed (4 in the 2100, 2 in the 2500) and a rebias would probably do it. However, I'm not an amp tech so talk to a qualified amp tech first and pay them to do it.

I know this is more than what you asked for, greendy, but this is for anyone else as well.

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

No problem, thanks for the info. It's good to hear that mine came stock with el-34's.

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

I was wondering about something.. Would I need a tubescreamer for my amp to get the tube overdrive at lower volumes? The reason why I ask is because people say the diode in the amp is like a tubescreamer in itself, and then I thought that it might be a bit unnecessary with a tubescreamer, but I don't know, that's why I ask.

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

Nah, not really. You can get plenty of overdrive at lower volumes on these things.

Because there are so many more pickups that sound even better!!!!! I have heard factory Epiphone and Bronze BC Rich pickups that sound better than a JB!!!! If you want a super versatile pickup that does almost anything really well, go for a Bill Lawrence XL500 or something else from Duncan that isnt hyped like Crazy!!. If you want a pickup that everyone says is very versatile but, it does nothing great or even well for that matter, go for the JB!

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

No, I haven't played many, but that is not the point at all. What isn't very good for you may be the best for me, opinions are not facts, or laws. But the problem is I can only choose from SH-4, SH-6, SH-8 and SH-10 in bridge, and for neck: SH-2,SH-6, SH-8 and SH-10.

hmmm... why only those four pickups Sune?

Re: what jcm 900 model is this? - any good?

Because that's the SD options I can choose from the guy who's making the guitar.
