Re: What Kind Of Guitar Strap/Straps Do You Play With?
Yeah, it's hard to remember around here, but there are a few people who actually make their living playing guitar and for them, guitar strap = tax deduction.
On my Schecter PT, I have a black leather strap that I've had since around 1984. 2.5" wide I think, and at this point it's the consistency of a cooked lasagna noodle. Until recently, I just switched it back and forth between my two Teles.
When I finished my Esquirized MIM Tele a few weeka ago I splurged on a new strap for it; Levy's suede, also about 2.5" wide. I'd like to say I prefer suede because it stays where I put it on my shoulder, but it really just fits my budget ($0) better.
I found years ago that I prefer a narrow strap, which lets me place the weight where I want it, rather than covering up my whole shoulder. Though, I haven't played a Les Paul in years and my guitars have tended to be moderately light weight.
Years ago, before Dimarzio, et al made nylon straps available in a rainbow of bright colors, I wanted a bright red nylon strap for my then-new white Dean V. I bought a 1" wide 6 ft long nylon dog leash, measured how long I wanted it off some cheap adjustable strap (remember those 70's embroidered things?) and melted a couple strap lock holes through it with a soldering iron. I used that dog-leash strap for years.
