what kind of pick? why?

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Sharp dunlop tortex .88 (green) for electrics

Dunlp Ultex for acoutstic

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Generic Fender-style white heavy with "RICH STEVENS" printed on one side. Why? Because I always used Fender Tortex heavies, but forced myself to switch to white since they're easier to see if you drop one on a dark stage. (I actually preferred the Tortex, which DO feel different.) I bought a gross of these back in about 1979 and still haven't used 'em up. I refuse to allow myself to try anything else 'til they're gone.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop 2mm Stubbies.

They have zero-give to them (a must for playing fast), the ideal taper, and they give you a big wide tone without having to use a high output pickup. They even make thin strings sound a guage or two heavier.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I use two pics, but not at once...:jester:

I use Dunlop nylon 1.00mm and a Dunlop Heavies thumbpicks in medium size.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I used to use Dunlop nylons, but realized that they darkened my sound noticably, so now it's:

Fender light American Confetti (acoustic)
Fender medium White Moto Pearloid (electric)

Both of those picks suit me very well. I like the Tortex, though.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I use several picks.

Gator-Grip 2.0mm - (black) electric and bass
Gator-Grip 1.14mm - (blue) electric and acoustic
Gator-Grip 0.53mm - (red) acoustic only
Tortex 0.88mm - (green) electric and acoustic
Autoharp felt picks - bass only (attack of a pick with a more finger-plucked sound)

The tortex is an oddity... it belonged to a friend and I inadvertantly picked it up and took it with me. I have so many picks laying around that I haven't gotten around to buying a dozen of them yet. I'm not too awfully concerned with pick thickness, but grip is a must. My fingertips tend to sweat enough that the gator-grips or tortex are a must (I don't hold a death grip on my picks, so friction helps keep me from slingshotting a pick across the room, which I have done, and is quite funny).

Re: what kind of pick? why?

the guy who invented fire said:
Tortex .73 (yellow) I used Fender heavies for years then switched to the Tortex...the .73 tortex are stiffer than a Fender Med but not as stiff as a Fender heavy and have a quicker attack that Fender picks not to mention they last longer and I happen to like the power coatin on them when they are new.

Yeah I like that powder too. I just moved up to the green ones thinking thicker wold be better... I miss the yellows already so I might switch back

Re: what kind of pick? why?

i use dunlop 3.0's

for me..a thick pick makes it easy to change the attack dynamics ( hard / soft picking ) and also cause the really thin ones hurt my fingers after a while :]

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Tortex .88 (green)
Dunlop Gator-Grip 1.14 (blue)
Dunlop USA Standard .73 (white with graphics)

nowadays i'm leaning towards the thinniest of these , I like everything from fell to sound and that "pluck" type of sound when i need it on my strat - it's the only pick that does liveliest tone.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Tortex .60 or .73.

I stopped breaking strings and fingers since I started using them. I prefer them to any other picks I have ever tried except real tortoise shell, they have the response, attack tone I like.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I have switched alot.

There are three picks that I really like, Tortex .88, Tortex 1.14 and Fender Medium.

Fender Medium is the winner at the moment, great for rythm and lead.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Delrin 500 1.5mm.
I like the Big Chubby 3.0mm too but my sound is better defined with the 1.5mm one.
I also like when the guitar kicks back during palm muting and rhythm playing without having the pick bend and 1.5mm is perfect in this for me.
For fast leads I play with fingers like Knopfler...but I must start using the pick sometime.

Edit: Its Dunlop Delrin 500 1.5mm finaly and not the Tortex one I wrote before.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Delrin 500 1.14mm. They are cheap and don't bend so much. I wish it
was a little stiffer, but the 1.5 is just too much. I used to use them, but
somehow they felt too hard plastic and they tend to wear out sooner.
Wish there was one size between them like 1.32 mm or something.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Me, either Dunlop Nylon (heavy gauge), Cool picks (heavy gauge, they have sort of a grip pad on them), or Brain Picks (again, heavy gauge, grip pad). I try to have a light grip with my picking hand but as a result I need to focus more on gripping it because I end up with my pick sliding around a tad. Also, my hands sweat a bit when I get nervous so a grip pad helps.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

used to play with Dunlop tortex but for the past 7 or so years i play with regular old Fender or Gibson Heavies.

I also play sometimes with a metal Pick. ( When doing my ZZtop impression!)

Re: what kind of pick? why?

i absolutely have to play with a Dunlop Jazz III XL...i love the grip on em and the feel and the tone!!!

Re: what kind of pick? why?

This topic had been dead for so long, I've gone up to Dunlop Nylon 1mm. I find the Tortex ones too stiff, but I do like them for rhythm playing. Usually yellows or greens.
